St. Clair's men advanced slowly north from Fort Washington in September 1791, building a road and forts along its route of supply as it advanced. On the night of 3 - 4 November 1791, near the headwaters of the Wabash River, some 1,000 Indian warriors surrounded St. Clair's men.
