Biden Approves $650 Million Missile Sale To Saudis After Earlier Vowing To End War In Yemen

Despite the prior stated intent by the Biden White House to see an immediate end to the war in Yemen, the administration on Thursday announced that it's approving a new $650 million sale of air-to-air missiles (AMRAAM) and related equipment to Saudi Arabia.

"The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia of AIM-120C Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and related equipment for an estimated cost of $650 million," a Pentagon statement announced. Specifically it includes up to 280 air-to-air missiles.

What's been described as the "forgotten war" in Yemen has raged since 2015, with for much of that period the Pentagon providing direct assistance to Saudi-UAE coalition airstrikes against Yemeni Houthi rebels backed by Iran. Prior US involvement in the Saudi-waged war grew increasingly controversial, given the high civilian death toll - amid a total estimated death toll of over 130,000 Yemenis killed.

Further the United Nations within the past two years has designated the conflict "the world’s worst humanitarian crisis." Recall that back in February Biden earned bipartisan praise for the following foreign policy "promises":

In his first major foreign policy address, President Joe Biden on Feb. 4 declared his commitment to "end the war in Yemen," which he called a "humanitarian and strategic catastrophe." The president announced that the US would stop assisting all "offensive operations" in that impoverished country and halt all "relevant arms sales" to the Saudi Arabia/UAE-led coalition that is waging war there.

In describing the rationale for the new massive weapons sale to the kingdom, the Thursday Biden administration statement characterized the 'defensive' nature of the systems:

We’ve seen an increase in cross-border attacks against Saudi Arabia over the past year. Saudi AIM-120C missiles, deployed from Saudi aircraft, have been instrumental in intercepting these attacks that also US forces at risk and over 70,000 US citizens in the Kingdom at risk.

There have been multiple missile and drone attacks launched out of Yemen over the past year, with the Iran-backed Houthis showing increased sophistication and reach.

Astoundingly, Pentagon also claimed that the Saudi kingdom is a "force for progress" in the Middle East: "This proposed sale will support US foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that continues to be an important force for political and economic progress in the Middle East," it said.

Tunnel Discovered Near French Ambassador Residence In Tunisian Capital, Investigation Launched

A tunnel dug near the French ambassador’s residence in La Marsa, a suburb to the northeast of the Tunisian capital, Tunis, was uncovered by Tunisian security forces during a counterterrorism raid on November 3.

In a statement, the Tunisian Ministry of Interior said that the tunnel was being dug from a nearby house. Security forces raided the house after receiving information about suspicious activities there. The house was being frequented by a known extremist.

The tunnel is now being investigated by the General Administration of the National Guard which is responsible for counterterrorism operations in Tunisia. France has not commented on the issue, yet.

Media sources reported that the tunnel, which ends near the residence of French ambassador Serge Degallaix, was at least 270 meters long.

Tunisian President Kais Saied said during a one-on-one meeting with Interior Minister Taoufik Charfeddine that was held after the counterterrorism operation that “criminal intent” was behind the tunnel.

“There is evidence confirming the existence of a criminal intent behind what was discovered,” the President said. “Thanks to our armed forces, Tunisia will remain safe despite all the desperate attempts, and our country is strong with its institutions and the cohesion of its people despite the sides [hiding] behind the curtain.”

The tunnel may have been a part of a complex terrorist plot to raid or bomb the residency of the French ambassador in Tunisia. Both al-Qaeda and ISIS are known to have cells in the country.

New Jersey Senate President Won’t Concede to Republican Truck Driver – Says “12,000 Ballots Recently Found in One County”

New Jersey’s Senate President Sweeney says he is not conceding to the Republican truck driver who beat him in Tuesday’s election.

We reported earlier on the truck driver in New Jersey who beat the Democrat President of the New Jersey state senate:

But now far-left Politico reports that Sweeney is not conceding:

New Jersey state Senate President Steve Sweeney is not conceding in a race The Associated Press called for Edward Durr, a virtually unknown Republican challenger, on Thursday morning.

“The results from Tuesday’s election continue to come in, for instance there were 12,000 ballots recently found in one county,” Sweeney said in an email to POLITICO. “While I am currently trailing in the race, we want to make sure every vote is counted. Our voters deserve that, and we will wait for the final results.”

Sweeney, who as Senate president is the state’s second-most powerful elected official, was down more than 2,000 votes to Durr,a truck driver who says he spent less than $10,000 on the race.

Bill Gates wants US & UK to spend billions on ‘germ games’

Activist-philanthropist Bill Gates has raised alarms with critics by suggesting that billions of dollars be invested into a global pandemic task force running “germ games” to prepare for future outbreaks or biological attacks.

Gates made his comments during a discussion with the chair of the Health Select Committee and former UK Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt at the COP26 summit this week.

“It’ll take probably about a billion a year for a pandemic Task Force at the [World Health Organization] level, which is doing the surveillance and actually doing what I call ‘germ games’ where you practice,” Gates said. He gave a ‘what-if’ scenario of bioterrorists releasing smallpox in multiple airports as a potential “germ game” that could be used to prepare for an attack.

Gates says his “global pandemic task force” must be financed sooner rather than later and should be a “priority” due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“The next year will be where those allocations have to get made, including this global pandemic task force,” he said, adding that both the US and UK will need to spend “tens of billions” on research and development first.

This research and development, Gates said, would include making vaccines cheaper, obtaining “big factories,” and “eradicating” common colds and the flu.

During his discussion with Hunt, Gates also said there needs to be a “new way” to create vaccines that works to stop transmission better, something that could be developed through his expensive idea for global research and development on potential pandemics.

“You know, we didn’t have vaccines that block transmission. We got vaccines that help you with your health, but they only slightly reduced transmission,” he said. “We need a new way of doing the vaccines.”
