The Unbearable Whiteness of Camping

 

People of color have been excluded from the camping industry for decades. The pandemic changed everything.

 

Like many other people of color, I never went camping as a child. To me, it seemed like a caucasian pastime. And I was right. As recently as a decade ago, 88% of campers were white. But we're at a turning point. Last year, 60% of first-time campers were non-white and for the first time ever, the representation of campers reflected the demographics of the United States. In this story, I delve into the history of colonialism and racism that has made the great outdoors feel so threatening to Black and brown people. And I explore why the pandemic changed everything.

Euthanasia deaths rise by over a third in Quebec, continuing previous year’s trend

 

Quebec is the only province to exercise any public oversight of its euthanasia program.

(Euthanasia Prevention Coalition) — The Sixth annual report from Quebec’s commission on end-of-life care for the year April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021, was submitted (unannounced) to Québec’s parliament, the National Assembly, on October 20, 2021. It was thanks to the Physicians’ Alliance Against Euthanasia that we learned of the report’s release.

 

The report indicates that there were 2,426 euthanasia deaths, up by 37% over the previous year, representing 3.3% of all deaths.
