It's a Catholic teaching to replace a flag with a white cloth called a "pall." Usually the flag is taken off in the entryway and replaced with a pall, then the opposite occurs on the way out.

Catholics have carried rosary rings during times of trouble as well as times of extended travel. It is believed that rosary rings originated in the 13th century. In the 16th century, rosary rings were carried in secret because religious persecution prevented Catholics from carrying traditional rosaries.
