If the ancient Jews wrote the Laws, why don't they follow them?

Throughout the history of the OT, the Jews kept disobeying their own laws.

How do you explain this?

Why would they write a bunch of laws, just to turn around and disobey the laws that they had written?

Jews aren't the only society who made laws for themselves. All societies make laws for themselves. And all societies have people who manipulate those laws, make laws to benefit just themselves, exclude "some" people from those laws, make stupid laws, etc, etc. etc.

Man's laws are imperfect.

The law in the US says that murdering unborn children is perfectly legal and even taxes its citizens to pay for the atrocity and calls it "woman's health". Imagine that euphemism, calling the murder of an unborn child, "woman's health". People are evil.

Is there anywhere in the Bible where God told people to kill their own children? Except when God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac but then at the last moment told Abraham to stop and provided him with a ram instead.

God does not want people to kill their own children.

Some people will point to stories in the Bible where God instructed the Israelites to wipe out entire communities, men, women, and children. What of that? Why would God tell them to do that?

Why do we even have a Bible that tells us these stories. Does the Bible come out of the Catholic Church or out of Judaism? Or both?

Why do we have copies of it in 100s of different languages 1000s of years after it was written?

We need to use discernment.

Jesus criticized the Jews in his days for making up laws to add to God's laws. And he criticized them for their "holier than thou" attitudes.

Man's Laws are complicated.

We cannot be complicit and resort to blind obedience.

Only God's Laws are perfect.

Follow God's laws.

Jesus said: My burden is light, my yoke is easy.

When people are left to do as they please, they usually choose to be selfish and greedy.

Then we are left with "might makes right"

"every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time"

Genesis 6:5-6

New International Version

5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.

Laws are supposed to be for the benefit of society. They are supposed to protect those who are the least able to protect themselves. Laws are supposed to protect those who mean no harm from those who mean to harm them.

Unfortunately, many of our laws fail in that regard, or are not evenly enforced.

If someone were to follow the 10 commandments themselves. Not enforce it on others, just follow it themselves. What would you think of that person? Would you think that they were a "good" person or a "bad" person?
