I've considered the moon is a reflection. The only way I can get it to work is if the moon is the exterior of Earth and we are really on the inside. A reflection of the surface of Earth. And it is covered in meteor strikes because it can still be hit by asteroids and meteors. Haven't worked on specifics. Just transient thoughts in my head.
