Because he is innocent, yet more so it makes for the best opportunity to demonstrate that it is the Prosecution committing the Crime in this case. For at some point, when Prosecution refuses to drop false charges, it is the Prosecution committing the injustice.
Btw, the reason this is such a beloved film, by both defense lawyers and honest prosecutors alike… is that Justice is eventually served even by the “prosecution” when he finally finds out the truth.

Real courage doesn’t work that way.
If, IF the prosecution were honest, they would take the next available opportunity to drop the charges. That they probably won’t, is as big or bigger a story, as is Kyle himself.

Consider:
At that point, the police KNEW a giant shitshow was under way. May or may not have known Kyle personally, but a fast assessment could often determine that Kyle WAS NOT THE PROBLEM… inviting him to go home, to avoid the more likely situation his in now… perfectly understandable for many a good LEO to have done.
That’s why i say, “IF”.
I suspect the prosecution is NOT honest… and by Kyle taking the stand, We stand a much better chance of finding out. So too, the whole world.
Riots from this would be both highly anemic and transparent. Not worried about that.
That is why acquittal and personally taking the stand, is a good chance for his own mental “vaccination” from such demons in his future.

Praying for the judge too… if he really is one of the few good guys left in the system wearing a robe… i really hope he can make this all VISIBLE and not just shut it down with mistrial, or directing verdict, or stopping Kyle from getting to defend himself in court for defending himself, while trying to defend his community. Real Justice would be real nice for a real change.
