Joe Manchin: ‘D.C. Can No Longer Ignore’ Inflation as Democrats Poised to Vote on $1.75 Trillion Infrastructure Bill

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) said Wednesday that D.C. “can no longer ignore” inflation as Democrats remain poised to pass the $1.75 trillion Build Back Better Act.

Manchin released a statement after the Department of Labor revealed the Consumer Price Index rose at the fastest pace in decades in October.

Breitbart News Economics Editor John Carney noted prices rose 6.2 percent compared with last October.

Manchin said in response to the reports about Americans reeling from rising costs, “By all accounts, the threat posed by record inflation to the American people is not ‘transitory’ and is instead getting worse. From the grocery store to the gas pump, Americans know the inflation tax is real and DC can no longer ignore the economic pain Americans feel every day.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Tuesday she hopes to pass the Build Back Better Act next week. Although the bill is poised to pass the House next week, it remains unclear if Manchin will support with its current spending level.

Manchin said in early November he would not vote for the $1.75 trillion Build Back Better Act without knowing about the bill’s impact on inflation and the deficit.

Manchin called for time to understand the implications of the mammoth legislation.

“That is why we must allow time for complete transparency and analysis on the impact of changes to our tax code and energy and climate policies to ensure that our country is well-positioned to remain the superpower of the world,” he said.

Manchin has warned he remains ready to block the bill in the Senate if the legislation would harm the economy. Democrats have a one-member majority in the Senate, and his vote against the bill could block the reconciliation bill in Congress’s upper chamber.

“I’m open to supporting a final bill that helps move our country forward. But I’m equally open to voting against a bill that hurts our country,” he said.

Swedes and German Among Foreigners Arrested for Aiding Illegal Immigration at Polish Border

Foreign nationals including a German and two Swedes have been arrested for aiding attempts to enter Poland illegally as the country’s Belarus border crisis continues.

Poland’s Border Guard (Straż Graniczna) announced following a day of violence on the Polish-Belarusian frontier on November 8th that it had issued 85 decisions to expel people from Polish territory, detained 17 mostly Iraqi nations, and arrested six for for aiding illegal immigration, including two Ukrainians, one Uzbek, one Syrian, and a national apiece from fellow EU member-states Germany and Sweden.

The following day another nine people, identified as Lebanese, Iraqi, and Syrian, were detained, with decisions to expel another 48 issued, and three more people detained for aiding illegal immigration, including a Russian, a Lithuanian, and another Swede.

“We will not allow Poland to become a route for smugglers, for organized crime groups, for enemies of our country, for illegal migration,” vowed the country’s Minister of the Interior, Mariusz Kamiński, after Monday’s events.

Over 10,000 border guards, police officers, and soldiers including activated territorial reserves have been deployed to the thickly-wooded frontier with Belarus, a former Soviet Socialist Republic outside the European Union. The quasi-Stalinist nation is alleged to be flying in planeloads of migrants directly from the Middle East to the Belarusian capital of Minsk and then pushing them — sometimes at gunpoint — to the borders of EU member-states Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia as part of a destabilising “hybrid attack” on the bloc.

The Polish government alleges that Belarusian forces are directing the migrants at the border, and has shared footage that purports to show them opening fire to intimidate them and control their movements at the frontier on social media. Other remarkable footage released by Poland from the border has shown the force with which attacks on their border from Belarus are now being authored.

Minsk and Brussels are at odds over sanctions placed on Belarus by the EU for, among other things, the Belarusian air force’s effective hijacking of a passenger plane travelling from Greece to Lithuania, so a journalist critical of Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko could be arrested.

Lukashenko also has particular grievances with some of its neighbours for sheltering Belarusian opposition politicians and dissidents, including a female Olympian who was afraid to return to Belarus from Japan after criticising the government while she was there.

Javid Doubles Down on Healthcare Vaxx Mandates, as NHS Jabs for Jobs Could See 73,000 Quitting

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said it was “absolutely the right decision” for unvaccinated carers to be forced out of their jobs, after the minister announced a similar vaccine mandate for the NHS that could see 73,000 people resigning.

On Tuesday, Health Secretary Sajid Javid confirmed that National Health Services (NHS) workers in England will have to be fully vaccinated against the Chinese coronavirus by the beginning of April, 2022, or potentially lose their jobs. The measures will likely be voted on in the House of Commons in the New Year.

The announcement came just two days before the final deadline for workers in English Care Quality Commission (CQC)-registered residential care and nursing homes to be fully vaccinated. The decision to do likewise in the NHS this week followed a consultation on whether the Covid-19 and influenza vaccines should be mandatory for health service medics. The flu jab, however, will not be mandatory, but the option remains “under review”.

Mr Javid said on Wednesday according to the BBC that some 93 per cent of the more than one million frontline NHS staff have had the first dose of the vaccine with 90 per cent being fully vaccinated, but around 103,000 are still completely unvaccinated.

Those will medical exemptions will not be forced to be vaccinated as well as those who do not have face-to-face daily contact with patients. The Telegraph says that the mandate will also apply to support staff who, while may not be involved in delivering healthcare to patients, nevertheless have daily contact with them, including hospital porters and receptionists.

However, official estimates published by The Times project that the vaccination mandate for NHS staff could see 73,000 employees leave such frontline positions.

The number of unvaccinated care home staff has more than halved from 88,000 to 32,000 — but that still leaves tens of thousands whose jobs are at risk from Thursday.

Javid defended his government’s vaccine mandates, however, claiming it is “all about patient safety”.

“This is all about patient safety,” Mr Javid told BBC Breakfast, continuing: “It’s about doing whatever we can to protect some of the most vulnerable people in our society, whether in care homes or in a hospital bed, and making sure we reduce that risk of infection from this horrid virus as much as we possibly can.

“In terms of what might happen in care homes, in terms of, perhaps the people still haven’t been vaccinated and therefore choose to leave, I would like that number to be as low as possible.”

Continuing that he did not know what the final number of dismissed or resigning staff would be, Javid claimed it would be “much lower” than the 32,000 quoted by the CQC, adding: “I don’t want to see anyone have to leave, but if by leaving it means that our care homes are safer for the people who are being cared for, I think that is absolutely the right decision.”

Javid’s remarks are considerably more toned down than when he bluntly addressed carers during a BBC interview last month: “If you can’t be bothered to go and get vaccinated, then get out and go and get another job.”

While the rhetoric has softened, the deadline has not, with carers still expected to be vaccinated by Thursday.

American Medical Association pushes pro-critical race theory materials in 'Health Equity' guide

The American Medical Association recently released a guide on "Advancing Health Equity" that promotes how to fight for critical race theory, includes a list of words not to say and their "equity-focused alternatives," and criticizes concepts like "meritocracy," "individualism" and the "'free' market."

The 55-page document released on Oct. 28 cites a guide by the organization Race Forward for how to advocate for critical race theory (CRT), which is called "Guide to Counter-Narrating the Attacks on Critical Race Theory."

The health equity guide argues physicians cannot eliminate "health inequities" by "focus[ing] only on individuals, their behavior or their biology." It says they instead must focus on language and collective political circumstances of certain groups.

"Given the deep divides that exist between groups in the United States, understanding and empathy can be extremely challenging for many because of an inability to really ‘walk a mile in another’s shoes’ in a racialized sense," a preface to the American Medical Association (AMA) guide says. "Collectively, we have an opportunity and obligation to overcome these fissures and create spaces for understanding and healing."

The guide's release comes amid culture war battles over what critical race theory is, whether it's really being taught and advanced by schools and other institutions, and whether its tenets should be adopted broadly by society.

"This is just the latest front in the Left’s campaign to inject Critical Race Theory into every corner of America," Jessica Anderson, executive director for the conservative Heritage Action, which has vocally opposed CRT, told Fox News.

"This document, published by the largest medical association in the country, is a brazen attempt to politicize the medical field and subject health care workers to far-Left speech police," Anderson added. "While the Left continues to falsely claim that CRT isn’t real, Americans are noticing what’s happening, and they’re fighting back. From the waiting room to the classroom, families are standing up to reject this racist ideology."

AMA President Gerald Harmon explained the reasoning behind the guide in a blog post when it was released on Oct. 28.

"As with science, our language must change and evolve over time based on new revelations and a deeper understanding," he wrote.

Rep. Issa unloads on YouTube for removing his speech: 'They're making decisions based on who says something'

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., tore into YouTube after the site removed a speech he gave. In a phone interview with Fox News, Issa cited the censorship as proof that its algorithms are biased against conservatives.

YouTube alleged that Issa's speech violated its rules against anti-vaccine misinformation, even though the only reference to vaccines that Issa made in the speech was to tout the superiority of the American COVID-19 vaccines over the Russian Sputnik vaccine.

The American vaccines are widely acknowledged to be superior to the Russian version, which U.S. authorities don't count toward its immunization requirements for foreign nationals seeking to enter the country.

Issa gave the speech in July at the EDGE2021 conference in Las Vegas, a highly respected government technology conference. Issa's office only recently found out that the speech was removed.

"The speech was about data and was a very nonpartisan speech… I used the analogy that just like the original Sputnik, when the Russians were first and we were better, they came out with their vaccine first but ours was better," Issa told Fox News.

Fairfax County Asks 12-Year-Old School Children About Their Sex Life

A new county youth survey directed at schoolchildren as young as 12 years old in Fairfax County, Virginia, will ask them questions such as whether they have ever had sex, how old they were when it happened, and how many people they have had sexual intercourse with.

The 2021 Fairfax County Youth Survey, a collaboration between Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools, as WJLA reports, will target students in 8th, 10th, and 12th grade. The survey is anonymous and not mandatory.

In late September, The Daily Wire’s Ashe Schow reported that two books had been removed from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) after a parent dramatically read graphic passages from them during a school board meeting. Schow wrote:

German Navy Chief Vows Long-Term Presence in Asia

A German warship deployed in the region will sail into the South China Sea to challenge Beijing's claims

On Tuesday, the head of Germany’s navy said the European country is committed to the Indo-Pacific region, where he said the so-called “rules-based international order” is being threatened by China, The Associated Press reported.

Vice Adm. Kay-Achim Schonbach’s comments came as the German frigate Bayern is in Tokyo, making it the first German warship to visit Japan in nearly 20 years. Last week, Japan announced that it was expanding military ties with Germany and the Bayern held joint exercises with Japanese warships.

The Bayern is set to sail into the South China Sea in an apparent challenge to Beijing’s claims to the waters. The US frequently sails warships into the disputed waters, and European countries are following. The UK and France have both sent warships into the South China Sea this year.

“The South China Sea is a global common, that is, a sea area that belongs to everyone, so it cannot be taken possession of or claimed by anyone if … we abide by the international world order,” Schonbach said.

Later this month, the Bayern will participate in sanctions enforcement against North Korea for three weeks. The frigate will monitor North Korean ships and look out for the transfer of cargo deemed prohibited by the UN.

The German presence in the region is part of the overall Western shift towards Asia to counter China. A key aspect of the Biden administration’s China policy is rallying allies against Beijing, and Europe seems eager to play along.

Targeting Trump: Durham Exposes Clinton Connections Behind “Steele Dossier” Smear, Raises Questions About Role of FBI, Justice Department

Special Counsel John Durham continues his steady march to the truth about the Russia mess—the sensational allegations of Trump “collusion” with Russia that disrupted and nearly derailed the Trump presidency. On Thursday, Durham indicted Russian affairs analyst Igor Danchenko on five counts of lying to the FBI about sources he used in compiling information for the Steele Dossier. Danchenko was a key source for Christopher Steele, the former British intelligence agent hired by Clinton allies to dig up dirt on Trump. Danchenko, the indictment notes, collected “the information that ultimately formed the core of the allegations” in the Steele Dossier.

One key source for Danchenko “was a long-time participant in Democratic Party politics” and “later an executive at a U.S. public relations firm,” identified in the charging document as “PR Executive 1.” The Associated Press later confirmed that “PR Executive 1” is Chuck Dolan, a former director of the Democratic Governors Association and an adviser to Hillary Clinton in both of her presidential campaigns.

Danchenko and Dolan were in business together, but the Russia analyst repeatedly lied to the FBI when asked about Dolan, claiming at one point that Dolan would not “be in any way involved” with the Steele Dossier allegations. The lies were important, the indictment says, because Dolan’s “role as a contributor of information to [the Steele Dossier reports] was highly relevant and material to the FBI’s evaluation of those reports” not least because Dolan “maintained historical and ongoing involvement in Democratic politics.”

INVESTIGATION – Deadliest batches of the Covid-19 Vaccines were disproportionally sent to red Republican states across the USA

On October 31st we exclusively revealed how an investigation of the USA’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) found extremely high numbers of adverse reactions and deaths have been reported against specific lot numbers of the Covid-19 vaccines numerous times, meaning deadly batches of the experimental injections have now been identified.

That investigation also led to the discovery that 130 different lot numbers of Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine distributed to more than 13 states, harmed on average 639 times more people, hospitalised on average 109 times more people, and killed on average 22 times more people than the 4,289 different lt number of Pfizer vaccine distributed to 12 states or less.

However, the most shocking finding of the investigation was that 100% of Covid-19 vaccine deaths reported to VAERS with identified lot numbers had been caused by just 5% of the batches produced. But the deeply troubling findings don’t end there, because we decided to conduct further analysis of the VAERS data on the Covid-19 vaccines, and we’ve discovered that the majority of the deadliest batches were clearly sent to Republican controlled red states across the USA.

The data used in the investigation was pulled from the publicly accessible VAERS database which can be viewed here. The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) is a United States programme for vaccine safety, co-managed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The programme collects information via reports made by doctors, nurses, and patients about adverse events (possible harmful side effects) that occur after administration of vaccines to ascertain whether the risk–benefit ratio is high enough to justify continued use of any particular vaccine.

Cutting War Budget Means Confronting Profiteers

Even as Congress moves to increase the Pentagon budget well beyond the astronomical levels proposed by the Biden administration, a new report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has outlined three different ways to cut $1 trillion in Department of Defense spending over the next decade.

A rational defense policy could yield far more in the way of reductions, but resistance from the Pentagon, weapons contractors, and their many allies in Congress would be fierce.

After all, in its consideration of the bill that authorizes such budget levels for next year, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives recently voted to add $25 billion to the already staggering $750 billion the Biden administration requested for the Pentagon and related work on nuclear weapons at the Department of Energy. By any measure, that’s an astonishing figure, given that the request itself was already far higher than spending at the peaks of the Korean and Vietnam Wars or President Ronald Reagan’s military buildup of the 1980s.

In any reasonable world, such a military budget should be considered both unaffordable and deeply unsuitable when it comes to addressing the true threats to this country’s “defense,” including cyberattacks, pandemics, and the devastation already being wrought by climate change. Worst of all, providing a blank check to the military-industrial-congressional complex ensures the continued production of troubled weapon systems like Lockheed Martin’s exorbitantly expensive F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, which is typically behind schedule, far above projected costs, and still not considered effective in combat.

Changing course would mean real reform and genuine accountability, starting with serious cuts to a budget for which “bloated” is far too kind an adjective.

Three Options for Reductions

t the request of Senate Budget Committee Chair Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the CBO devised three different approaches to cutting approximately $1 trillion (a decrease of a mere 14 percent) from the Pentagon budget over the next decade. Historically, it could hardly be a more modest proposal. After all, without any such plan, the Pentagon budget actually did decrease by 30 percent) between 1988 and 1997.

Such a CBO-style reduction would still leave the department with about $6.3 trillion to spend over that 10-year period, 80 percent more than the cost of President Biden’s original $3.5 trillion Build Back Better proposal for domestic investments. Of course, that figure, unlike the Pentagon budget, has already been dramatically whittled down to half its original size, thanks to laughable claims by “moderate” Democrats like Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) that it would break the bank in Washington. Yet such critics of expanded social and economic programs rarely offer similar thoughts when it comes to the Pentagon’s far larger bite of the budgetary pie.

The options in the budget watchdog’s new report are anything but radical:

Option one would preserve the “current post-Cold War strategy of deterring aggression through [the] threat of immediate U.S. military response with the objectives of denying an adversary’s gains and recapturing lost territory.” The proposed cuts would hit each military service equally, with some new weapons programs slowed down and a few, as in the case of the B-21 bomber, cancelled.

Russia Flies Two Tu-22M3 Long-Range Bombers On Patrol Over Belarus

On November 10th, Russia carried out a rare dispatch of two nuclear-capable strategic bombers to patrol Belarusian airspace.

Moscow’s decision came as the EU considered sanctions to punish Minsk for what it calls an artificially created crisis, something Belarus denies.

The Tupolev Tu-22M3 bombers that Russia sent to overfly Belarus are capable of carrying nuclear missiles, including hypersonic ones. It came as Belarus carried out a drill of its air defense forces on the same day and reinforced its western and northwester border with additional protection.

The Russian military department confirmed this fact and reported that the aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces completed the tasks of patrolling the airspace of the republic. At the same time, the crews worked out interaction with ground control points of the Armed Forces of Russia and Belarus.

In addition, within the framework of this flight, the work of the air defense of the allied state was checked, the check was carried out under the leadership of the commander of the Air Force and Air Defense of Belarus. Saule Omarova, Biden’s handlers’ nominee for comptroller of the currency, the government’s top bank regulator, is a self-proclaimed “radical,” as Stephen Green has noted. Just how radical became clear in a video clip that surfaced Tuesday, in which Omarova calls matter-of-factly for the destruction of the oil, gas, and coal industries. Well, we can’t say that we haven’t been warned.

In the clip, Omarova, who was born in the Soviet Union and is not a native English speaker, is seen discussing “troubled industries and firms that are in transitioning.” She continues: “And here what I’m thinking about is primarily coal industry and oil and gas industry. A lot of the smaller players in that industry are, uh, going to probably, uh, go bankrupt in, in, in short order, at least we want them to go bankrupt if we want to tackle climate change, right?”

Wrong. The idea of climate change that is caused by human beings and can be ended by human action rests on assumptions that are dubious at best. And the entire climate change hysteria that the Western political and media elites are relentlessly ginning up is not taken seriously in the People’s Republic of China, which stands to benefit the most from the West’s economic self-sacrifice to appease Gaia.

Indeed, while Saule Omarova is calling for the bankrupting of the oil, gas, and coal industries, the People’s Republic mouthpiece Global Times published a bland piece on Monday proclaiming that “China’s coal output hit multi-year high, will help ensure warm winter.” The article reports happily: “China’s daily coal output has reached 11.93 million tons, the highest level in recent years, and increasing coal supplies have laid a good foundation to ensure energy supply security and residential heating during the winter, the nation’s top economic planner said on Monday, as many parts of the country were hit by a severe coal [sic] wave over the weekend.”

Nary a word about shutting down the industry to fight the chimera of climate change. You might almost get the impression that Chinese authorities aren’t being kept awake nights by nightmares of Obama’s and Biden’s luxury beach houses being swept away by rising sea levels, nor eaten away with regret about how it all could have been prevented if only they had gutted their economy. And you’d be right.

This radical and destructive rhetoric was to be expected from Omarova, who, as Stephen Green pointed out, “graduated from the Soviet Union’s Moscow State University in 1989 on the Lenin Personal Academic Scholarship.” Omarova was apparently such a convinced Marxist in the late 1980s that she wrote her thesis on Karl Marx’s thought, and tellingly has refused to release that thesis now.

In October, Senator Pat Toomey (R-Sanity) wrote to her asking for a copy: “I write today seeking a copy of your thesis, ‘Karl Marx’s Economic Analysis and the Theory of Revolution in The Capital,’ which you wrote as a student at Moscow State University on the V.I. Lenin Personal Academic Scholarship. While it appears that you have deleted any reference to your thesis in the version of your curriculum vitae (CV) that is currently available on the Cornell Law School website, the paper appeared on your CV as recently as April 2017.” There is no indication that Omarova turned over the thesis in response to this appeal.

Why the secrecy about it? If it represents views she no longer holds, she could release it and take the opportunity to explain that. If, however, she still holds the views it espouses, she may have every reason to conceal it. And here we are.

Operation Mobile 4, a two-week operation targeting multiple forms of organised property crime and fraud, has successfully concluded its November action days after thousands of border and roadside checks across Europe. Taking place in 16 European countries and further 6 Balkan states, operatives successfully intercepted hundreds of stolen vehicles and vehicle parts, as well as 1 000 irregular migrants and 31 people smugglers.

A multi-pronged operation against smuggling

Europol provided remote support by crosschecking in real-time the information collected in the field against its databases.

During the two weeks of actions from law enforcement, officers pursued criminal activity on multiple fronts, carrying out vehicle checks, border searches and database analysis. The main focus related to stolen vehicles, vehicle parts, and migrant smuggling, with investigators also targeting trafficking in drugs, firearms and endangered species.

The activities led to the seizure of 518 stolen vehicles. Officers also recovered several stolen luxury cars from Western Europe they found in Poland, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, and Slovakia, as well as 4 stolen boats. The authorities that took part in Mobile 4 observed an increasing trend of smuggling of stolen trucks, buses, agriculture machinery, and holiday cars such as campervans.

Officers simultaneously raided chop shops, which dismantle stolen vehicles and facilitate parts smuggling, and performed roadside checks. This yielded 400 stolen vehicle parts, as well as 140 forged IDs and vehicle documents.

Further checks by law enforcement on road vehicles and boats detected 1 000 irregular migrants being smuggled into the EU, leading to the arrest of 31 migrant smugglers.

INTERPOL-supported financial crime operation: Irish police dismantle local network operating worldwide

An INTERPOL operational team deployed to Dublin for financial crime investigations into local organized crime networks has seen national police make global connections and identify suspects worldwide.

At the request of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Dublin, INTERPOL’s Global Financial Crime Task Force (IGFCTF) provided on-the-ground support to the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) (19 - 21 October) as part of Operation Skein, Ireland’s 18-month long nationwide investigation into an Irish based transnational criminal organization engaged in financial crime.

The INTERPOL task force enabled GNECB to share investigative intelligence with police forces in all continents using INTERPOL’s secure global police communications network called I-24/7.

Permitting Ireland’s national police – or “An Garda Sìochàna” – to take their investigations beyond national borders served to establish investigative connections in all continents, and provide insight into how and where these criminal gangs are operating.

Arrests and prosecutions outside of Ireland are foreseen as ongoing investigations unfold.

Mapping out the global picture

Using INTERPOL forensic data analytical capabilities, INTERPOL helped Garda police download data and call records from phones and computers seized during the course of Operation Skein investigations.

Evidence extracted is currently being analyzed by INTERPOL with a global lens to help identify and target the principal global protagonists, and provide further insight on how they carry out these cyber enabled financial crimes.

Some of the data collected during the operation has triggered cooperative investigations between the US and South Africa, with the support of INTERPOL’s financial crime task force.

A sample of other cases triggered by the operation are believed to have links with the West African organized crime group “Black Axe” which is thought to be responsible for similar cyber enabled attacks on a global level.

Ireland’s Operation Skein

Garda has been investigating an organized crime gang engaging in a wide range of serious financial crime across Ireland for several years.

Crimes include business email compromise, invoice re-direct fraud and laundering of the proceeds of these frauds through bank accounts in Ireland and other countries.

Eighteen months of intense Garda investigations revealed that this network had allegedly stolen more than €14 million from Irish businesses and citizens, laundering at least €7 - €8 million via ‘mule’ bank accounts in banks all over the world.

INTERPOL created the Global Financial Crime Task Force (IGFCTF) in 2020 with member countries in order to enhance international cooperation and innovation with public and private sector partners, focusing on cyber enabled fraud, money laundering schemes and Covid-19 related crimes.

Philippine President Duterte’s Former Economic Adviser was a “Drug Lord,” Says Affidavit in New ICC Case

Key Findings

Testimony provided to the ICC has linked Yang to the narcotics trade in a city where Duterte was formerly mayor.

Duterte has led a brutal crackdown under the auspices of a ‘war on drugs’ that critics have said is a cover for extrajudicial killings. The ICC in mid-September opened a case on the drug campaign as well as extrajudicial killings committed by a ‘death squad’ during Duterte’s two decades as mayor of Davao City.

Under Duterte, Yang and an associate have become successful and powerful businessmen in the Philippines, brokering deals through China’s flagship Belt and Road Initiative.

Yang is linked to a procurement scandal in which Duterte’s government handed out allegedly overpriced contracts for COVID-19 supplies.

The Philippine Senate looked into the COVID-19 contracts and summoned Yang to testify. A Senate committee has since said that Yang could face charges including perjury or false testimony.

Explosive new testimony at the International Criminal Court (ICC) alleges that a close associate of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has long-standing ties to the narcotics trade.

Duterte has, since 2016, spearheaded a merciless ‘war on drugs’ that critics say is merely cover for widespread unlawful killings of thousands of Filipinos.

In mid-September, the ICC opened an investigation into the campaign. Human Rights Watch has said the killings “could amount to crimes against humanity.” The Duterte administration has said it will not cooperate with the investigation.

The recent testimony to the ICC, which contributed to its decision to open an investigation, comes from Arturo Lascañas, who says he was a member of the “Davao Death Squad,” an elite police unit formed in 1988 and allegedly controlled by Duterte during his two-decade mayorship of Davao City on the island of Mindanao.

His account describes hundreds of extrajudicial killings carried out by the squad while Duterte was mayor, years before he became president and launched his bloody nationwide anti-drug crackdown.

The 186-page affidavit, submitted to the ICC in 2020 and obtained by Rappler, repeatedly names Duterte associate Michael Yang as the coordinator of a network of methamphetamine labs in Mindanao in the early 2000s.

A separate intelligence report from 2017 by a former anti-narcotics policeman also says that Yang, a Chinese national active in business in the Philippines, ran drug labs. Lascañas’s affidavit is the first independent corroboration of the detailed claims in that report.

Yang and his business partner Lin Weixiong – who was also linked to narcotics in the 2017 police intelligence report – have risen to prominence in the Philippines since Duterte became president.

Yang spent a year as Duterte’s presidential economic advisor in 2018, and under Duterte both he and Lin have emerged from obscurity to secure lucrative business contracts, broker deals for major capital investments, partner with Chinese state-owned enterprises, and take key roles in associations devoted to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, a giant infrastructure strategy being pushed around the globe.
