Prosecutors are playing for the MSM and Kenosha. They need Kyle dirtied up for the slander/libel cases that follow.
I think that's what the threat of the jury doxxing was about, too. They want some kind of mistrial so they can claim there was no jury judgement in the criminal case.
If they can get the judge angry, they'll use that as a motive if the judge dismisses or goes DV. Normies can be spoon fed bullshit if they only follow MSM reports, especially jurors later on.
So a public image battle is going on. I think a judge intervention was in the cards, and it was best, although rough, for Kyle to take the stand to show who he is to the US. prosecutors had no choice but to go for the character assassination, that's what the people paying them demanded.
Still think Lin Wood is in on the future strategy. He's not a criminal lawyer. He'll come in later during slander/libel trials.
