In the 1950's-1970's "they" were called Negro's. Anything else was an insult, and "they" let you know about it.
If I had called one "Black or African American" they would have given me a dirty look and chewed my ass out.
Then we went to the term "Blacks". "I'm a Black man, honky!"
Then to "Black American's"
Then to "African American's"
Now to "People of Color"!
