Have learned since moving abroad that all of these shipping companies contract each other according to some business arrangements that are opaque to customers. Right now we have boxes coming from the US that were shipped on our UPS account, but are out of UPS's hands after leaving Long Beach. USPS is notoriously fucked up on things like this. Ordering from Amazon is totally hit-or-miss, because it depends on which carrier is contracted on that particular order, as to whether they have the ability to reach us in our country.

My conspiratorial mind tells me they really are trying hard to prevent you from shipping anything personal. More and more you have to include full description lists, or receipts. You can't ship simple food items like home made cookies or local coffee (e.g. gift items). Anything commercial gets tied up in customs. Forget about shipping anything like jewelry. I once tried to ship a diamond ring to myself, it was already bought and paid for, with a receipt. FedEx accepted and processed the order on 2 or 3 different attempts in the US, only for the order to be rejected later with no reimbursement of charges. They are worried about 'conflict' diamonds, and I am not a distributure, that was the excuse. I nearly lost my fucking mind on that one.

So this exercise they are running on controlling your movements and controlling your communications, also extends to controlling what you can ship. It's totally OK if it is a brand new item bought from an online shop…boy, no problems there. But good luck to you trying to ship Christmas gifts. Fuckers.
