US embassy in Yemen raided, staffers held ‘hostage’

Houthi rebels have reportedly invaded the defunct US embassy in Yemen’s capital and seized documents and equipment. They also detained three locals working with the Americans, in addition to 22 security staff captured earlier.

A group of Houthis breached the US compound on Wednesday and seized “large quantities of equipment and materials,” according to a report by Al-Masdar News. The raid comes almost a week after three Yemeni nationals who worked for the US were allegedly “kidnapped” from a private home in Sana’a. Another 22 Yemenis, most of whom worked as security for the US embassy complex, have been detained in recent weeks as well.

Saudi Arabia and the US have described the Houthis as “Iranian-backed.” The Shia militia overthrew the Saudi-backed president in 2014, and has been fighting against the Saudi-led invasion of Yemen since 2015.

Citing an unnamed source, Al-Masdar reported that the three staffers seized on November 5 were the embassy’s economic officer Jameel Ismail, USAID employee Hisham Al-Wazir, and US-Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) coordinator Abdul Mueen Azan.

A State Department spokesperson told reporters on Thursday that the US was “concerned about the breach of the compound that had been used by our Embassy” before the US closed it down in 2015, on account of the war.

“We call on the Houthis to immediately vacate it and return all seized property,” they added.

Foggy Bottom also called for “immediate release” of Yemeni nationals held by the Houthis, presumably referring to both the trio detained last week as well as those captured earlier.

“We’ve seen some progress and we’re continuing to work this critical issue. The majority of those who have been detained are no longer in custody,” spokesman Ned Price told reporters on Tuesday, adding that the State Department is “committed to ensuring the safety of those who serve the US government overseas.”

Democrats Are Profoundly Committed to Criminal Justice Reform – For Everyone But Their Enemies

Principles of rehabilitative justice, reform of the carceral state, and liberalized criminal justice evaporate when Democrats demand harsh prison for their political adversaries.

The 2020 protest movement that erupted after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha became one of the most sustained and consequential in modern U.S. history. Though there seems to be a somewhat bizarre effort underway by its advocates to insist that this movement accomplished nothing — why are some claiming that radical cultural and political changes are happening? — it is demonstrably true that, as intended, the movement transformed discourse and policy around multiple issues from race, to policing, to gender identity, to the teaching of history, and fostered an ongoing effort for still-greater changes.

The issues raised by that movement were varied and often shifting: though it was catalyzed by the claim that the U.S. is swamped with racist police brutality as illustrated by the Floyd and Blake cases, it quickly metastasized into other areas far removed from those two cases. White Antifa members clashed with Black protesters over the attempt to steer or broaden the movement away from a narrow focus on racist police brutality into one devoted to generalized insurrectionary anarchy. One of the largest and most densely packed gatherings was a spontaneous march, at the height of the COVID pandemic, in Brooklyn, where ten thousand people paid homage to the importance of "black trans lives,” a cause whose relationship to the Floyd and Blake cases was tenuous at best. Institutional changes regarding gender identity were quickly adopted by the corporations and security state institutions that lent their support, however cynically, to this growing movement.

But one constant focus of this movement has been the need for sweeping criminal justice reform. Americans were introduced to the slogan "Defund the Police,” with some activists making clear they meant that literally, while leading progressives in Congress chanted along. Prison abolition and the evils of "the "carceral state” became mainstream progressive positions. Last May, The New Yorker heralded what it called “The Emerging Movement for Police and Prison Abolition,” noting that while some activists merely want incremental reform, for many these events "confirmed that the institution of policing should be abolished completely. In the past year or two, propositions to defund or abolish the police and prisons have travelled from incarcerated-activist networks and academic conferences and scholarship into mainstream conversations.”

Chilean President Faces Impeachment Over Pandora Papers Findings

Chilean President Faces Impeachment Over Pandora Papers Findings

Published: 11 November 2021

Written by David Klein

Chilean legislators voted to impeach President Sebastián Piñera after revelations in the Pandora Papers showed that he had a potential conflict of interest related to the sale of shares in a mining company from his children to a close associate.

“With 78 votes in favor, 67 against and 3 abstentions, the Chamber of Deputies approves the [constitutional accusation] against the president,” the Chilean Chamber of Deputies announced in a tweet on Monday.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists said in a report that the shares were sold in December 2010, nearly nine months into Piñera’s first term as president, for US$138 million, to be paid in three installments.

However, the deal contained a contingency that could have political ramifications. The final installment of $9.9 million would not be made if any steps were taken that would irrevocably prevent a mining project.

Before the deal Piñera had a history of defending environmental interests, shutting down a proposed thermoelectric plant in a nature preserve only months before that deal was made.

Despite efforts and appeals by environmental activists to protect the mining site, Piñera remained mum on the topic.

For his supporters, that’s not enough to prove wrongdoing.

“There isn’t a single piece of evidence,” said Piñera’s attorney Jorge Gálvez, which would link the president to wrongdoing, according to ICIJ.

“There cannot be a purely political hearing to remove the president of the republic,” he said during the Impeachment hearing which began with a 14-hour filibuster.

Chilean authorities began investigating Piñera only days after the papers were published.

“I want it to be an example and testimony that this parliament is capable of putting an end to the abuses, to the impunity with which this government has acted,” said opposition leader Jaime Naranjo, during his 14 hour filibuster at the hearing.

Piñera was one of three Latin American leaders who were named in the papers.

Lawless FBI Raids Project Veritas and James O’Keefe’s Home Last Week — Then Leaks Private Documents to New York Times This Week

James O’Keefe’s New York home was raided by FBI agents just 5 days ago on Saturday.

On Friday, the FBI conducted a raid of two New York addresses of people connected to Project Veritas as part of an investigation on how Ashley Biden’s diary was made public shortly before the 2020 election.

Project Veritas Founder James O’Keefe’s home was also raided by FBI agents as part of this “investigation”.

The New York Times was likely notified of the raid by the Stasi FBI.

“The F.B.I. carried out search warrants in New York as part of a Justice Department investigation into how pages from Ashley Biden’s journal came to be published by a right-wing website,” New York Times reported.

An hour after the raid was conducted, The New York Times contacted one of the reporters to ask for comment on this confidential investigation.

The New York Times was the first to break the story. They even reached out for comment, after his home was raided at 6 a.m.

In October 2020, Ashley Biden contacted the feds and reported several items were stolen in a burglary, including her diary.

Project Veritas never published pages of Ashley Biden’s diary, however, another conservative site did.

O’Keefe: The FBI took materials of current, and former, Veritas journalists despite the fact that our legal team previously contacted the Department of Justice and voluntarily conveyed unassailable facts that demonstrate Project Veritas’ lack of involvement in criminal activity and/or criminal intent.

Like any reporter, we regularly deal with the receipt of source information and take steps to verify its authenticity, legality, and newsworthiness. Our efforts were the stuff of responsible, ethical, journalism and we are in no doubt that Project Veritas acted properly at each and every step

O’Keefe “put himself at great risk” when he released a statement on the investigation of PV journalists. The FBI raided his home the very next day.

Now tonight, five days after the FBI raided his home, The New York Times released a new report on James O’Keefe with several private documents from Project Veritas.

It took Chris Wray’s FBI less than a week to leak O’Keefe’s documents to their cohorts at the NY Times.

'I don't believe I have, no': Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he's never told a lie in public life

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he has never told a lie during his time in public life after being asked about Malcolm Turnbull’s accusations he had "a reputation for lying".

After being asked about Malcolm Turnbull’s accusations he had "a reputation for lying" Prime Minister Scott Morrison has insisted he's never told a lie during his time in public life.

Appearing on Melbourne radio station 3AW Mr Morrison was asked by host Neil Mitchell "you ever told a lie in public life?".

The Prime Minister replied: “I don’t believe I have, no, no".

The question about Mr Morrison’s truthfulness comes after accusations from former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull – but also French President Emmanuel Macron – that he is a liar.

Mr Turnbull, who fell out with Mr Morrison after losing power in a leadership spill in 2018, told a journalist during the COP26 climate talks the Prime Minister had “lied to me on many occasions … Scott has always had a reputation for telling lies”.

Mr Macron called Mr Morrison a liar for allegedly hiding Australia’s intention to terminate a contract to purchase French submarines in favour of a new deal with the Americans and British.

Asked directly how it felt to be called a serial liar by Mr Turnbull, the Prime Minister said "sledges" were part of politics and he had learned “not to have a thin skin".

“Well look, I’m in politics. People take sledges at me all the time," he said.

“I’ve learnt in public life over a long period of time to not have a thin skin."

In a possible sly dig at Mr Turnbull – who former foreign minister Alexander Downer termed ‘bitter’ for his attacks on the Prime Minister – Mr Morrison said politicians need to “not get bitter, to just stay focused on the job”.

“You’ll get slings and arrows from everywhere. You’ll get them from politics, you’ll get them from media. You’ll get them from time to time, and if you haven’t got the thick skin to deal with that then you’re in the wrong job," he said.

“It’s not something that distracts me, I tend not to take things personally. I think that’s a good practice if you want to be in public life. To stay focus on the job and don’t get distracted by the sledges."

The Prime Minister also said he had not spoken to Mr Turnbull since his accusations.

When asked if he wanted to speak to him he also replied "no".

The Prime Minister would not be drawn on whether he wanted Mr Turnbull "out of the Liberal Party".

“That’s not a judgement for me, it’s a matter for the Liberal party," he said.

“I don’t see the need for that, if others do, that’s fine, but it’s just not something I think about. Why would I spend a second worrying about that?"

He was also not concerned when Mr Mitchell said in making his accusations Mr Turnbull had "written the Labor Party’s campaign strategy for the next election".

“We’ve spent more time in this interview talking about it (the accusations) than I’ve spent time even thinking about it. It’s not something I fuss about.

Youngkin: Dems' $1.2T infrastructure bill passed by Congress offers 'good support' for Virginia

"The politics on the other side of it, I'll leave to the folks who pay attention to that," said the Old Dominion's governor-elect, who led the GOP to a sweep of statewide offices in the recent election.

Virginia Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin says the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill recently passed by Congress will help his state.

Less than one week after the GOP sweep of statewide offices in Virginia's election, 13 House Republicans incurred the wrath of former President Trump by voting to pass the bill, which President Biden helped to negotiate.

Youngkin was asked for his reaction to those GOP lawmakers crossing the aisle to give Biden a legislative victory.

"Mine is far less of a good or bad political decision," Youngkin said after a 246th birthday ceremony for the Marine Corps at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va. "There's going to be good support for Virginia that comes out of that bill, and right now we're trying to make sure we identify where the support for Virginia can come. We've got a lot of infrastructure needs in Virginia.

"I've been very focused on broadband access in rural Virginia, really important, making sure that our roads and bridges are reinforced and maintained, but we've also got a lot of expansion we need to do in order to connect Virginia."

Youngkin said Virginia has one of the "great natural wonders in the world" in its ports.

"Hampton Roads should be a growth engine for Virginia," he said. "We need to connect it better so that all of Virginia can benefit from the leading capabilities that exist at our port, and so this infrastructure bill, I think, will provide a lot of resources for that. The politics on the other side of it, I'll leave to the folks who pay attention to that. I'm really focused on making sure Virginia gets moving, and I think the infrastructure bill will help us."

The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the legislation will add to the nation's deficit.

Trump criticized the Republicans who voted in favor of the bill in the House and Senate, referring to them as "RINOs" or "Republicans In Name Only."

"How about all of those Republican Senators that voted thinking that helping the Democrats is such a wonderful thing to do, so politically correct," Trump said in a statement on Sunday. "They just don’t get it! Now they’ll go for the big kill — getting their second $1.9 Trillion Bill (really $5 Trillion) approved, again with RINO support."

Trump was referring to the separate nearly $2 trillion social spending bill the Democrats are seeking to pass with budget reconciliation.

Joe Biden Sides with Chinese Solar Manufacturers Evading U.S. Tariffs

President Joe Biden’s Department of Commerce has sided with Chinese solar manufacturers who produce in Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, denying a request to investigate the manufacturers for evading United States tariffs on Chinese products.

This week, the Biden administration crushed a campaign by American solar manufacturers to ensure tariffs were imposed on products made by Chinese solar manufacturers who have shifted their production to other nearby foreign countries to avoid U.S. tariffs.

“The Commerce Department’s unwillingness to investigate illegal circumvention by Chinese solar companies is a gift to the Chinese Communist Party that comes at the expense of American companies and American workers,” Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) CEO Michael Stumo said in a statement:

President Biden promised to create 10 million green new jobs. Instead, this decision ensures that China’s use of Uyghur forced labor in Xinjiang to manufacture polysilicon will continue. The Biden administration claims to want to Build Back Better and boost U.S. domestic manufacturing but a decision like this that only benefits the Chinese Communist Party is a serious red flag that the Build Back Better initiative is nothing more than a slogan. [Emphasis added]

The American Solar Manufacturers Against Chinese Circumvention, made up of a number of domestic manufacturers, filed a petition in August, asking the Biden administration to review whether Chinese solar manufacturers were illegally avoiding tariffs by moving production to Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Biden had been lobbied by 12 Senate Democrats who sent a letter asking the administration not to impose any tariffs on the products made in Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam by the Chinese solar manufacturers.

“New tariffs on solar products from these three countries would stall many ongoing and planned U.S. solar projects, negatively impacting every segment of the U.S. solar industry and resulting in significant job losses,” the Senate Democrats wrote.

Those who signed the letter include Sens. Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Tom Carper (D-DE), Angus King (D-ME), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Jack Reed (D-RI), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and John Hickenlooper (D-CO).

Bokhari: Trump White House’s Weapon Against Deep State Saboteurs Rattles Establishment Media

It’s been over a year since the 2020 election, but the establishment media are still addicted to Trump-bashing. Their latest target is John McEntee, one of the former Trump White House officials who loyalists to the former president believe was effective in implementing his agenda and cutting down on leaks and disloyalty in the ranks.

McEntee is a subject of a recently published book excerpt from Betrayal, from Jonathan Karl, chief Washington correspondent for the establishment broadcaster ABC News.

Published in the Atlantic, a magazine now owned by far-left billionaire tech heiress Laurene Powell Jobs, dubbed the “new Soros” by Breitbart News editor-in-chief Alex Marlow, the excerpt is overwhelmingly negative in its assessment of McEntee.

On the plus side, the piece provides a useful guide to Republican voters and Republican presidential hopefuls regarding who can and cannot be trusted in the federal government.

McEntee’s crime, in the eyes of the establishment media, is that he fought back against the efforts of establishment Republicans and permanent bureaucrats to sabotage the Trump presidency–and even worse in their view, he actually succeeded.

Throughout the Trump years, the media made celebrities of bureaucrats and White House political appointees who leaked against the President, undermined his agenda, or turned on him after exiting the presidency.

Lucrative book deals and media gigs awaited any official, from senior appointees like John Bolton to mid-ranking nobodies like Alexander Vindman, who threw Trump under the bus.

For three years, Trump struggled to solve this problem. Paralyzed by hostile deep state bureaucrats, and inept or disloyal appointees from the Republican establishment, the Trump administration was being smothered by leaks, politically motivated investigations, and two bogus impeachment frenzies.

When John McEntee was appointed to lead the White House Presidential Personnel Office (PPO), as Karl’s book admits, everything changed.

Via the Atlantic:

McEntee told the president exactly what he wanted to hear: that his political problems were caused by people who pretended to support him but were really against him, the secret Never Trumpers right there in his administration. It was time to root out the “deep state.”

Karl frames it as surprising that President Trump considered it necessary to search for deep state saboteurs “secret Never Trumpers” in his ranks.

Yet in the same extract, Karl mentions Miles Taylor, a NeverTrump Republican appointee at the Department of Homeland Security, who in an anonymous 2018 op-ed for the New York Times admitted that he and other officials were ceaselessly working to undermine the President.

'Left Winger' Bill Ackman Says Kyle Rittenhouse Is "A Patriot Who Acted In Self-Defense", Media Assumes Twitter Account Hacked

Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman is likely about to become the new poster-boy for white-supremacy, assigned to the junk heap of 'wrong' right-ward-thinking racists as he dares to suggest that Kyle Rittenhouse is an innocent "patriot" and may not be the nazi mass-murderer that the media has constantly defined him as for months. (sarcasm off).

In a well reasoned Twitter thread this evening, Ackman details his thoughts about the Rittenhouse trial, starting with a shocker for many…

"Last night, Neri [Ackman's wife] and I watched several hours of .#Kylerittenhouse direct testimony and cross examination. We came away believing that #Kyle is telling the truth and that he acted in self defense…"

The thread continued…

We found him to be a civic-minded patriot with a history of helping his community as an EMT and fireman in training, in his removing hate graffiti earlier that day from a local school, and ultimately in volunteering to protect a business during the night of August 25th in Kenosha.

Our first hand impressions of Kyle were materially different from those we had previously formed based on media reports and opinion pieces that we had consumed.

I have always been frustrated to read an inaccurate press report about a subject I know well, yet somehow I continue to believe other articles in the same newspaper about subjects I know less well.

Media and political bias are dividing our country and destroying lives.

While we have not heard the entire trial, based on our assessment of Kyle on the stand, we believe that he will be found innocent by the jury.

Often times, communities react negatively and even violently after a jury verdict where they are surprised by the outcome based on what they have previously read in the newspaper, seen on TV or more likely been served on social media.

I encourage you to watch the trial, or at a minimum his testimony and cross examination, before you form a view of his guilt or innocence.

With respect to my own political bias, I am not a gun owner, nor a member of the NRA.

On balance, I support stronger gun regulations and removing loopholes in the sale of guns.

Unfortunately it seems that society’s view of #kyle ‘s innocence depends more on one’s views about gun control rather than on what actually took place last August.

Kyle Rittenhouse’s life is at risk. Justice demands a fair trial. Society would benefit greatly if politics did not enter the court room and convict innocent people.
