GG: That looks like my bicep being vaporized, yes.

CC: Okay. And it’s being vaporized as you’re pointing your gun directly at him. Yes?

GG: Yes.

CC: Okay. So when you were standing 3-5 feet from him with your arms up in the air, he never fired. Right?

GG: Correct.

CC: It wasn’t until you pointed your gun at him, advanced on him with your gun, now your hands down, pointed at him that he fired. Right?

GG: Correct.

Kimberley Motley is the first Western lawyer in Afghanistan, single-handedly tackling some of the world’s most challenging human rights and criminal cases. I had the pleasure of meeting her recently in Dubai, where we discussed her sterling work drawing attention to human rights abuses and helping people otherwise forgotten by society.

The former Miss Wisconsin has set up her own private practice in Kabul and brushed off death threats to take on cases such as brokering deals to stop child marriages. Six-year-old Naghma Mohammad was going to be sold into marriage by her father in order to pay his debts. Kim stepped in to negotiate, organised a meeting with local elders and ensured both Naghma and her sisters are now protected.

However, there is still much work to be done - more than 30% of girls under 18 surveyed by Kim within Afghan jails are either married or engaged. To tackle this wider problem, The Elders founded Girls Not Brides, a global partnership committed to ending child marriage and enabling girls to fulfil their huge potential. Their research revealed recently that a 10% reduction in child marriage could result in a 70% reduction in a country's maternal mortality rates. Globally, 14 million girls are married before they turn 18 each year – Girls Not Brides and individuals like Kim are working tirelessly to change that.

Kim describes her work as “wanting to help people who are invisible become visible”. The international attention her cases have attracted – such as defending a young girl imprisoned for 'adultery' after being raped and impregnated - has helped shine a light on some of the worst abuses in the country.

I loved Kim’s words in the Daily Beast discussing her motivation for doing such important work: “Definitely my kids and husband motivate me. You always want your children to have it better than you have. I want to be a great example to them that there is right in this world. There are so many wrong things in the legal system in the world, if I can make things right, it makes me feel really good.”

Take a look at Kim’s website to find out more about her cases and see the positive impact one person determined to make a difference can have in the world.

The Kyle Rittenhouse murder trial has illuminated details experts say are similar to other cases of armed men who are not members of professional law enforcement, taking violent action to purportedly uphold the law. Joy Reid outlines how in America, the vigilantism of predominantly White men has too often been upheld by the law.
