Poland is in discussions with Lithuania and Latvia on whether to trigger Article 4 of the NATO treaty amid the deteriorating situation on the border with Belarus, Mateusz Morawiecki, the Polish prime minister, has told the Polish Press Agency PAP.

"It seems that it is needed more and more. It is not enough to publicly express our concern. Now concrete steps and the commitment of the whole alliance are needed,” PM said.

Article 4 foresees joint consultations whenever any of the alliance states consider themselves threatened by a breach of territorial integrity, political independence, or security.

"There is no doubt that the matter has gone too far," PM Morawiecki explained. "We already know that in order to stop the Belarusian regime, words alone are insufficient. We are aware that stronger sanctions will be necessary. In the current situation, I am talking every day with the leaders of European countries on the matter of the crisis on the Belarusian border. We are working very closely with the prime ministers of Lithuania and Latvia,” the Polish PM said.

Biden sponsors Taliban parade

Taliban forces held a military parade in Kabul on Sunday using captured American-made armoured vehicles and Russian helicopters in a display that showed their ongoing transformation from an insurgent force to a regular standing army.

The Taliban operated as insurgent fighters for two decades but have used the large stock of weapons and equipment left behind when the former Western-backed government collapsed in August to overhaul their forces.

The parade was linked to the graduation of 250 freshly trained soldiers, defence ministry spokesman Enayatullah Khwarazmi said.

When Hurricane Ida stormed across Louisiana on August 25, the largest ammonia factory complex in the world, owned by CF Industries, was closed for safety reasons and only reopened ten days later. Curiously at that point two more factories from the same CF Industries, those in the UK, announced they would close two more fertilizer plants on September 22, claiming high natural gas prices as the cause, despite the fact their Louisiana plant had just been out for ten days. The two plants supply some two-thirds of UK domestic fertilizer demand. The Government was forced to agree emergency subsidies to CF Industries to reopen one of the two plants temporarily to ease the pressures. The combined effect of the three major closures by the same group added to the crisis in world fertilizer supply. It may be just coincidence that the two largest stock owners of CF Industries are Vanguard and BlackRock.

This crisis is snowballing. As of early October reported closures of ammonia fertilizer production had been announced by the giant German chemicals company, BASF, in Belgium and Germany, indefinitely. It also affects production of ammonia-based diesel fuel additive, AdBlue.

Further closings are ongoing in Achema in Lithuania, OCI in Netherlands. Yara International is reducing 40% of its EU ammonia fertilizer production. Fertiberia in Spain is closing a plant along with OPZ in Ukraine, a major fertilizer producer. In Austria Borealis AG has closed production and Germany’s largest ammonia producer, SKW Piesteritz, has cut production by 20%.

Worsening the overall global fertilizer crisis, the Biden Administration in August slapped sanctions on the Belarus government, explicitly naming Belaruskali OAO, the world’s fourth largest fertilizer producer, for “sustaining the Belarusian regime at the expense of the Belarusian people.” Belaruskali controls about one-fifth of the world potash-based fertilizer market

New Hampshire's second-largest teacher's union is calling on the state's education commissioner to resign over a new website that makes it easier for parents and students to report teachers for alleged discrimination.

The American Federation of Teachers New Hampshire president Deb Howes released a statement Thursday stating New Hampshire's education commissioner Frank Edelblut "declared a war on teachers."

The website is the state's latest addition to a recent law that bans specific kinds of teaching about race, racism, and sexism as part of a larger movement to prevent critical race theory from being taught in schools. The law, which is called the Right to Freedom from Discrimination in Public Workplaces and Education, aims to "prevent public school teachers from teaching that one group of people is superior or inferior to another group, or that certain groups are inherently oppressive, among other concepts," according to New Hampshire Public Radio.
