Activist who fights for Afghan women draws a crowd

Thereโ€™s no better party than a party for a purpose.

An appreciative crowd of lawyers and socially conscious Calgarians filled the Petroleum Club to learn about the incredible feats of American lawyer Kimberly Motley, a human-rights activist who fights for women accused of moral crimes in Afghanistan.

Hailed as a โ€œsuperwomanโ€ by media outlets throughout the world, Motley spoke of the life-threatening adversity she has faced navigating a corrupt legal system to free wrongfully convicted men and women from Afghan prisons, including her most famous client, Gulnaz, a victim of rape imprisoned for reporting the crime.

The event was organized by the incomparable Emma Grace May, a former Calgary lawyer turned realtor with Century 21 Bamber, and Sippy Chhina of Deloitte, an event sponsor.

By the end of the inspirational evening $25,000 was raised for Motleyโ€™s foundation, which will expand the reach of her practice, allowing her to take on more pro bono clients and train Afghan lawyers in the complexities of true advocacy.

Motley is also working to bring awareness to YouTube sensations the Boxing Girls of Kabul, who will compete at the Olympics this summer.

Other sponsors in attendance included: Felicia Bortolussi of FMCLaw; Shelley McCullough of Maclin Ford; and Tara and Ron Mathison of Matco Investments.

Kimberley Motley: Making waves in Afghanistan's legal system

A former American beauty queen who only left the US for the first time four years ago is perhaps an unlikely champion for change in the Afghan legal system.

But working as Afghanistan's only foreign defence lawyer, Kimberley Motley has helped both foreigners and Afghans trapped in the country's judicial system.

She took on one of last year's most high-profile cases, representing a woman named as Gulnaz, who had been jailed for adultery after she was raped by her cousin's husband.

That case led President Hamid Karzai to issue his first presidential pardon for a case defined as a "moral crime", a move seen by some as showing new commitment on the part of Afghan government to defend the rights of women.

As an outsider in the Afghan legal system, Motley feels she is in a unique position to get things done.

For a century, people in the U.S. have been getting vaccinated to prevent outbreaks of life-threatening illness, Dr. Payal Patel of the University of Michigan's Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation told the PBS NewsHour's Nicole Ellis during a conversation on Nov. 12. The coronavirus pandemic is latest iteration of that history, Patel said during the conversation on getting children vaccinated against COVID-19. This conversation comes as more questions are coming up about whether, and where, mandates will exist for the COVID-19 vaccine.
