the Chinese sci fi book/movie The Three Body Problem has a "dark forest" first contact scenario. Earth people having evolved recently as a space capable culture send powerful radio messages into space(as we did) announcing to all "Here we are! We're a just hatched baby civilization! Anyone out there!?"
the "dark forest" refers to predators - the more technologically advanced civilizations which feed on recently emerged baby species - and who are found throughout the enormous reaches of interstellar space.
