Former MLB shortstop Julio Lugo has died after “presumably” suffering a heart attack, according to ESPN’s Enrique Rojas. He was 45.
Lugo, who grew up in Brooklyn and attended Fort Hamilton High School, would’ve turned 46 on Tuesday. His 12 MLB seasons included stints with the Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals
He won the World Series with the Red Sox in 2007, his first year with the team, and hit .237 that year with 73 RBI and 135 hits. In that World Series sweep against the Rockies, Lugo went 5-for-13 with two runs scored.
In 2009, he was traded to the Cardinals during the season and combined to hit .280 that year across 88 games for the two teams.
The Astros selected Lugo in the 43rd round of the 1994 draft out of Connors State College in Oklahoma. He made his MLB debut in 2000, slashing .283/.346/.431 with 10 homers, 40 RBI and 22 steals in 116 games as a rookie. He played with the Rays and Dodgers before joining the Red Sox, and finished his career with the Braves in 2011.
