New York ethics board revokes approval of Cuomo book deal

In a 12-1 vote, the state Joint Commission on Public Ethics revoked its previous approval of Cuomo's book, requiring the disgraced former governor to reapply for the board's approval.

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo may lose his $5.1 million book deal after a state ethics board on Tuesday revoked approval for him to publish the work.

In a 12-1 vote, the state's Joint Commission on Public Ethics revoked its previous approval of Cuomo's book, claiming that state government staffers and resources were improperly used in preparing it. Cuomo must now reapply for the board's approval.

According to The Hill, Cuomo published his book "American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the Covid-19 Pandemic," prior to his resignation amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

Cuomo's spokesperson Rich Azzopardi responded to JCOPE's decision to rescind its approval in a statement to local news station WABC, saying the board doesn't have that kind of authority.

"These JCOPE members are acting outside the scope of their authority and are carrying the water of the politicians who appointed them," Azzopardi said after the vote. "It is the height of hypocrisy for [Gov. Kathy] Hochul and the legislature's appointees to take this position, given that these elected officials routinely use their own staff for political and personal assistance on their own time."

Mexico’s World Bank-Funded Mandatory Biometric Database Raises Serious Ethical and Legal Questions

Mexico’s government wants the biometrics of all its citizens. Given the fragility of its institutions and organized crime’s infiltration of both government and law enforcement, this is a major cause for concern.

Mexico has a serious problem with identity theft. Last year, the country ranked eighth worldwide in terms of the incidence of the crime, according to data from the country’s central bank, Bank of Mexico. Since then the scale of the problem has done nothing but grow, as huge amounts of work, leisure and consumption have migrated online.

A cybersecurity study conducted by Citrix found that 60% of the Mexican companies it consulted had suffered some form of cyber attack since the start of the pandemic, including identity theft and ransomware. Mexico is also one of the countries most frequently targeted by Trickbot, a Trojan horse whose main function is the theft of banking details and other credentials, according to a recent report by the newspaper Milenio.

Against this backdrop Mexico’s Lopez Obrador government is seeking to pass a draft law that will create a “Unique Digital Identity Card,” or CUID. If the law is passed, digital identity will become mandatory for all Mexican citizens and foreigners living on Mexican soil. All the information, including each user’s biometric data, will be stored on a centralised database. The proposed law was already passed by Mexico’s lower chamber in December 2020 and is now awaiting passage in the Senate.

World Bank Funding

The biometric ID card project is being funded by the World Bank, an organisation that is driving digital ID adoption around the world, particularly in the Global South. The bank is pushing digital ID in poorer countries with the ostensible goal of providing legal identity to the 1.1 billion people, mainly in Asia and Africa, who do not currently have one.

But the program is mired in controversy. After the recent exodus of U.S.-allied forces from Afghanistan, it was discovered that many of the World Bank-funded data troves left behind had fallen into the hands of the Taliban, and could be used to track down people who had aided the occupation forces. That data included some half a million records, including biometric identifiers, on every member of the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police, reported MIT Technology Review:

The data is collected “from the day they enlisted,” says one individual who worked on the system, and remains in the system forever, whether or not someone remains actively in service. Records could be updated, he added, but he was not aware of any deletion or data retention policy—not even in contingency situations, such as a Taliban takeover.

A presentation on the police recruitment process from NATO’s Combined Security Training Command–Afghanistan shows that just one of the application forms alone collected 36 data points. Our sources say that each profile in APPS holds at least 40 data fields.

These include obvious personal information such as name, date, and place of birth, as well as a unique ID number that connects each profile to a biometric profile kept by the Afghan Ministry of Interior.

But it also contains details on the individuals’ military specialty and career trajectory, as well as sensitive relational data such as the names of their father, uncles, and grandfathers, as well as the names of the two tribal elders per recruit who served as guarantors for their enlistment. This turns what was a simple digital catalogue into something far more dangerous, according to Ranjit Singh, a postdoctoral scholar at the nonprofit research group Data & Society who studies data infrastructures and public policy. He calls it a sort of “genealogy” of “community connections” that is “putting all of these people at risk.”

Government abandons plan to force academics to disclose overseas political party membership

A move to force thousands of academics to disclose their memberships of overseas political parties has been abandoned by the federal government after push back from university leaders over new foreign interference guidelines.

Universities will instead decide which staff, based on a risk assessment, must disclose their connections to foreign governments, military and intelligence agencies, as well as any financial support they receive for research from other countries.

The new foreign interference guidelines, to be announced by the federal government on Wednesday, reflect heightened concerns within the Coalition about research theft by the Chinese Communist Party and other foreign actors.

Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews said the imminent return of international students to Australian universities highlighted the importance of the guidelines as a mechanism to protect “free, open, transparent debate that is so vital to an Australian education”.

More than 145,000 international student visa holders are stuck overseas, the majority of whom are from China or India.

“The guidelines will protect universities, students and researchers from hostile foreign actors and intelligence services who have been known to target sensitive research, muzzle debate, and intimidate foreign students,” Ms Andrews said.

Echoing concerns raised by Australian security agencies, Education Minister Alan Tudge said universities were a target for foreign interference by “foreign actors using sophisticated and deceptive means to steal Australian research and intellectual property”.

The measures are, in part, a response to revelations by a Human Rights Watch report earlier this year, which documented accounts of Chinese international students being surveilled and harassed by their pro-Beijing classmates.

The guidelines cover a range of areas, including requiring universities to have robust cyber security strategies. They also include a new requirement for staff and students who are engaged in foreign collaboration to be given training on how to “recognise, mitigate and handle concerns of foreign interference”.

However, the final guidelines depart significantly from an earlier draft version that required all academics at every Australian university to disclose their foreign party membership for the past 10 years. It would have captured tens of thousands of academics, including those in low-risk research fields, and applied equally to members of the US Democratic Party and the Chinese Communist Party. The government was forced to abandon this requirement after a revolt from university leaders, including criticism that it was “a sledgehammer, blanket approach”.

Brainwashing the cybernetic spectator: The Ipcress File, 1960s cinematic spectacle and the sciences of mind

Abstract

This article argues that the mid-1960s saw a dramatic shift in how ‘brainwashing’ was popularly imagined, reflecting Anglo-American developments in the sciences of mind as well as shifts in mass media culture. The 1965 British film The Ipcress File (dir. Sidney J. Furie, starr. Michael Caine) provides a rich case for exploring these interconnections between mind control, mind science and media, as it exemplifies the era’s innovations for depicting ‘brainwashing’ on screen: the film’s protagonist is subjected to flashing lights and electronic music, pulsating to the ‘rhythm of brainwaves’. This article describes the making of The Ipcress File’s brainwashing sequence and shows how its quest for cinematic spectacle drew on developments in cybernetic science, multimedia design and modernist architecture (developments that were also influencing the 1960s psychedelic counter-culture). I argue that often interposed between the disparate endeavours of 1960s mind control, psychological science and media was a vision of the human mind as a ‘cybernetic spectator’: a subject who scrutinizes how media and other demands on her sensory perception can affect consciousness, and seeks to consciously participate in this mental conditioning and guide its effects.

Keywords: brainwashing, cybernetics, history of film, neuroscience, spectatorship

In the early years of the cold war, Americans and their allies were frequently invited to imagine ‘brainwashing’ as a new and dangerous threat to democratic civilization. Stories about brainwashing circulated widely in the United States and beyond as western citizens tried to make sense of new enemies and new forms of warfare that emerged after the Second World War (Carruthers, 2009; Melley, 2012; Seed, 2004). Befitting the postwar era’s many innovations in visual media, ‘brainwashing’ gained an iconography, apparent in films and television shows, as well as a body of literature. Tracking the history of changing popular beliefs about brainwashing is an admittedly complex undertaking, but the visual imagery surrounding brainwashing seems to have undergone a straightforward transformation. At first, in the 1950s, representations of brainwashing were inspired by real events that took place in countries ruled by communist parties. By the mid-1960s, more fantastic visions of brainwashing became common, and often brainwashing appeared as futuristic, overtly scientific processes that were as incredible as they were entertaining. As the cold war wore on, film and television increasingly did more than portray the era’s evolving imagery of brainwashing: they served as models for how Americans and their allies imagined the possibilities of mind control. In such films as The Manchurian Candidate (1962), A Clockwork Orange (1971), The Parallax View (1974) and Videodrome (1980), the historian Andreas Killen observes, visual media are themselves depicted as precision tools for conditioning and coercing audiences (Killen, 2011).

CAUGHT ON VIDEO: Wisconsin Election Officials Admitted to Telling Election Officials to Break the Law Before 2020 Presidential Election

Trump Communications Director Liz Harrington posted a string of tweets on Tuesday on the criminal conduct by the Wisconsin Election Commission during the 2020 presidential election.

The WEC allowed nursing homes across the state to steal votes from dementia patients and elderly adults for Joe Biden.

There is nothing a Democrat won’t do to steal an election.

They respect no one and nothing.

In this first video below Election Commission Official admitted to breaking the law before and after the 2020 election.

The Wisconsin Election Commission voted 5-1 to order nursing homes to break election laws during a Zoom meeting that was only posted to the public 1 hour before the vote.

WEC’s Ann Jacobs scoffed at concerns family members should be notified ballots would be sent directly to nursing homes

“Don’t you want the families to know what’s going on here?”

Families found out AFTER the election that invalid votes were cast in their loved ones’ names.

Only one commissioner was concerned about ordering nursing homes to BREAK THE LAW

“The thing I’m afraid of is possible fraud in nursing homes…where you have whomever filling out these ballots…I think that’s a problem.”

That’s exactly what happened!

Mayorkas Says Biden's Border Policies Are Nearly Perfect Despite 1.7 Million Crossings in 12 Months

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas defended the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis on Tuesday, saying the federal government deserves an “A” grade with regard to its handling of security at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Mayorkas faced the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday to answer for the failings at the border throughout the past year. During a brief line of questioning from Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, the Homeland Security secretary offered the country a view into the mindset of hard-line leftists.

“Do you believe that the Biden immigration policies are successful?” Graham asked Mayorkas.

“Senator, I think rebuilding a broken immigration system and rebuilding a dismantled one takes time, and we’re on the road to success,” Mayorkas said.

Graham followed up: “So you think we’re on the right track as a nation?”

“I do,” said Mayorkas.

“OK. How would you grade yourself?” the senator asked.

“Senator, I’m a tough grader on myself, and I give myself an A for effort in investment in mission and support of our workforce,” concluded Mayorkas.

Of course, the Biden administration, by any objective metric, deserves a failing grade for the way it’s handled the border crisis.

The situation at the border is a historic failure for American citizens and those who have been hoodwinked by the White House into paying human smugglers to guide them to the border.

The secretary’s comments come after a year in which at least 1.7 million illegal migrants have crossed into the country through the porous southern border.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that from October of 2020 through September of 2021, immigration officials encountered 1,734,686 people crossing into the United States from Mexico. Those are just the people they caught.

Of those illegal crossers, 1,105,925, or 63.8 percent, were single adults, and not families with children. Unaccompanied minors made up 146,925 (or 8.5 percent) of the people apprehended by understaffed and overworked immigration officials.

The Big Russian Collusion Coverup Must End With John Durham’s Report

The big question that remains is whether the ringleader and masterminds of the Russian collusion hoax will ever be revealed and held accountable.

With each new indictment, Special Counsel John Durham is slowly exposing the extent of the 2016 Hillary Clinton campaign’s involvement, and that of other longtime Democrat operatives, in the most destructive political dirty trick in history. The big question that remains is whether the ringleader and masterminds of the Russian collusion hoax will ever be revealed and held accountable.

The indictments handed down involve lying to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and the FBI. Last year, Kevin Clinesmith, the FBI attorney who falsified a document that was then presented to that court, received a mere slap on the wrist. What punishment will Michael Sussmann and Igor Danchenko receive? Considering the turmoil this hoax put our nation through in the last five years, the criminal penalties should be severe. But will they be?

Former FBI Acting Director Andrew McCabe was rightfully fired and stripped of his pension because he “lacked candor” to his own internal investigators. He left in disgrace but was never indicted.

Unfortunately, the Biden administration has now restored his pension, reimbursed $500,000 of his legal fees, and ensured McCabe will receive his retirement cufflinks and service plaque. How can this not be viewed as a reward for his participation in the FBI’s involvement in the attempted coup against a duly elected president?

In contrast, Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, President Trump’s national security adviser, saw his reputation ruined when the FBI targeted him in an effort to hurt Trump. Fueled by a “get Trump” attitude, the FBI investigation and then the Special Counsel Robert Mueller probe dragged on for two years into Trump’s presidency — despite the fact the FBI knew as early as October 2016 that its primary piece of evidence, the Steele dossier, was tainted by Russian influence and disinformation.

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s report began to peel back the layers of deception but also raised more questions about the FBI’s and Justice’s representations of the Christopher Steele dossier. The report included former FBI Assistant Director Bill Priestap’s statement that the FBI had no knowledge of Russian influence on the Steele dossier

Information contained in the report’s footnotes directly contradicted Priestap’s statement, but those footnotes were conveniently redacted, hidden from public view. My staff uncovered those redacted footnotes, but it still took more than two months to have them declassified and made public. Once they were revealed, the media yawned, ignoring the stunning revelation.

I recently asked Horowitz in a Senate hearing who made the decision to classify and redact those footnotes. He testified that “FBI and Justice Department leadership” ultimately made that decision. I would blame “deep state” actors. To this day, documents President Trump declassified in his final days of office and that should have been immediately turned over to Congress and made public remain hidden within the deep state.

Aspen Disinformation Group Includes Twitter Exec Who Censored Hunter Biden Story

Commissioners spread Jussie Smollett hoax, censored unflattering RBG interview

The Twitter executive responsible for blocking stories about Hunter Biden's laptop is one of several advisers to the Aspen Institute's disinformation commission.

Yoel Rothis one of several questionable advisers to Aspen's Commission on Information Disorder, which on Monday released its much-anticipated report. Commission members include Katie Couric, who recently acknowledged that she edited comments on National Anthem protests out of a 2016 interview with Ruth Bader Ginsburg to preserve the justice's reputation with liberals. Another commissioner, Rashad Robinson, helped fuel actor Jussie Smollett's hate crime hoax.

Commission members' censorship of legitimate news stories could undercut their lofty mission. The commission blamed "decreasing levels of public trust" in public institutions for the crisis, which it dubs a "whole-of-society problem that can have life-or-death consequences." Its report calls for Congress and the White House to take action to counteract disinformation.

Roth, the head of site integrity at Twitter, blocked access to an Oct. 14, 2020, New York Post article regarding emails from Hunter Biden's abandoned laptop. Roth told the Federal Elections Commission he blocked the story in part because the intelligence community had briefed him that foreign governments might release hacked materials prior to the election. No evidence has emerged that Biden's laptop was stolen or hacked, and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey has since acknowledged that the company should not have blocked links to the story.

The Aspen Commission report criticizes Twitter and other social media companies for failures to rein in disinformation but does not cite Twitter's censorship of the Biden article.

The tech billionaire who funded the commission, Craig Newmark, has sponsored research that pushed disinformation about Biden's laptop. Newmark paid for a study from New York University that asserted that social media companies are not biased against conservatives. The report defended Twitter's decision to block the Hunter Biden laptop story and pushed the unsubstantiated claim that the news reports were based on "stolen" documents.

Undisclosed in either the Aspen Institute report or the New York University study is that Newmark donated more than $100,000 to Joe Biden's presidential campaign.

Robinson, the president of the racial justice group Color of Change, repeatedly circulated the false claim that Smollett, who is black and gay, was attacked by two white Trump supporters who hurled bigoted slurs at him. Robinson pushed the hate crime allegation even after evidence emerged that Smollett staged the attack.

Another commission adviser, Renee DiResta, advised American Engagement Technologies, a tech company that created fake online personas to stifle the Republican vote in the 2017 special Senate election in Alabama. The company, which was funded by progressive tech billionaire Reid Hoffman, created fake Russian bots to follow the Republican candidate. DiResta denied knowledge of the Alabama initiative and later joined another tech company, New Knowledge, that took part in the disinformation project.
