A wealthy WA businessman and a former wife of the late Alan Bond have emerged as the surprise new owners of the Perth Heat baseball team.

 

Eileen Bond and Rory Vassallo, who are part of a consortium including broadcaster Christian Galopolous, have taken inspiration from the resurgent Perth Wildcats, and hope to capitalise on a new international format for the Australian Baseball League starting this summer to increase the game’s popularity.

 

Mr Vassallo made his fortune through a portfolio of childcare centres he sold in 2014 before moving into childcare-centre construction.

 

He is a director at the South Fremantle Football Club, where Mrs Bond is the number one ticketholder.
