‘I do not need to be lectured by Scott Morrison’: Dan Andrews savages PM over Covid commentary

Daniel Andrews says Scott Morrison should pipe down on vaccines and lockdowns given his record over the past year.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has told Scott Morrison he’s in no place to offer lectures on coronavirus restrictions given the federal government’s troubled handling of the vaccine rollout.

A furious Mr Andrews unloaded on the Prime Minister on Friday morning, saying Mr Morrison should consider his own track record before attacking states over their reopening plans.

Mr Morrison earlier this week knocked a plan by Labor-led Queensland to ban unvaccinated people from venues once the 80 per cent double-dose mark was achieved next month.

He said it was time for governments to stop “telling Australians what to do” now that vaccination rates were approaching the thresholds set out by national cabinet.

Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles was among those to hit back, accusing Mr Morrison of cosying up to “a coalition of anti-vaxxers” and putting people’s health at risk for his own political ambition.

Mr Andrews joined the fight during an interview on Sunrise on Friday morning.

“I have not come on your program this morning to have an argument with the Prime Minster, but I will say this. He is right to say that we have been in people‘s lives,” Mr Andrews said.

“Why do we have lockdowns? Because we did not have a vaccine. Who forgot to order the vaccine? It wasn‘t state premiers. I do not need to be lectured by Scott Morrison about these issues.”

Victoria last night eased Covid restrictions, meaning the state now has more freedoms than NSW.

Mr Andrews also said it “was a bit rich” for a prime minster from Sydney to be lecturing people about freedom.

“We have done the hard yards because there was not a vaccine. If there had been a vaccine earlier, when the virus came from Sydney this year, we would not have needed to lockdown.”

In another breakfast TV segment, Defence Minister Peter Dutton leapt to the assistance of the Prime Minister, backing his stance on states opening up.

“I think the Prime Minister has made a perfectly sensible remark here,” the Queensland-based Mr Dutton told Nine’s Today show.

“That is, the states in the plan they‘ve signed up to, the commitment they gave to the country is when we got to 80 per cent double vaccination rate we would go back to having to live with this.

“I just think you cannot segregate a part of the community, even if you disagree with the decision they‘ve made and we are moving into a phase now where we have to live with this virus.”

Gov DeSantis visits Brandon Honda in Brandon, Florida to sign legislation that prohibits mandatory COVID-19 vaccination: 'We are respecting people's individual freedom in this state'

Sunshine State Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday signed legislation that ensures Floridians have the freedom to make their own decisions regarding COVID-19 vaccination without facing the threat of losing their job.

"We are respecting people's individual freedom in this state," DeSantis said while delivering remarks at the Brandon Honda dealership in Brandon, Florida.

The conservative governor signed legislation that prohibits private employers from requiring COVID-19 vaccination. Workers who do not want to get the shots can be exempt due to recovery from prior COVID-19 illness, religious or health concerns, testing, use of personal protective equipment, pregnancy, or expected pregnancy, according to a press release, which notes that employers who breach the employee health protections will get slapped with a fine.

"Government entities may not require COVID-19 vaccinations of anyone, including employees," the press release notes. "Educational institutions may not require students to be COVID-19 vaccinated," it also states. "School districts may not have school face mask policies."

The location of the event appeared to be a reference to the expression "Let's go Brandon," which has become a euphemism for the profane pejorative "F*** Joe Biden."

When asked whether he went to Brandon due to the trolling of the presidential administration, DeSantis answered, "So I think that Brandon, Florida's a great American city. I think the people here are fantastic."

Former President Donald Trump released a statement endorsing and defending Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) on Thursday after Democrats and two Republicans censured the popular Arizona representative because they were triggered by an anime meme that was posted on social media platform Twitter.

“Congressman Paul Gosar has been a loyal supporter of our America First agenda, and even more importantly, the USA,” Trump declared in the statement, adding, “Paul is a Congressman who is highly respected in Arizona, strong on Crime, Borders, our Military, and our Veterans. He continually fights for Lower Taxes, Less Regulations, and our great, but under siege, Second Amendment. Paul Gosar has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”

House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy has received criticism for not mounting a convincing defense against the media assassination campaign launched at Rep. Gosar, who is considered by many experts to be one of the most influential and effective House members in the GOP.

7 Companies Caught in China’s ‘Copycat’ Trap

Brands from around the world want to sell their products in China. After all, the country is home to a 1.4 billion strong market—a population no other nation can fully match.

But there’s one problem business leaders—from Steve Jobs to Elon Musk—have to deal with in exchange for that market access: copycats.

Many major brands have gotten dragged into years-long legal disputes to protect their trademarks. And to make things worse, the Chinese court system won’t necessarily side with the established brands. Sometimes, the real brands are even forced to apologize—and pay millions of dollars in compensation to their copycats.

That’s all made possible by a practice known as “trademark squatting”—a technique often used by Chinese companies.

First, they register trademarks for famous foreign brands, and then sit on them. That way, when the real brand enters the China market, they can then sue the owner and demand money.

The practice has survived because of a policy under the country’s trademark law, which follows a “first file, first serve” principle, meaning whoever registers the trademark first, gets it. Whereas in the United States, it’s given to the first company to widely use it.

George Christensen makes third attempt to block release of AFP letter

Nationals MP George Christensen made a secret submission to the information watchdog as part of an effort to block the release of details about a police probe into his Philippines travel, days after saying the document falsely accused him of a serious crime.

The Nationals MP has spent two years fighting to prevent the public release of a letter sent by the Australian Federal Police to former Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton.

For two years Nine News, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald have been trying, under Freedom of Information laws, to access the document sent on June 25, 2018.

In the letter, the Australian Federal Police advised it was closing the case into Mr Christensen, but warned the Queensland MP remained an ongoing risk of being compromised, according to sources who have seen the letter.

“I am not happy with documents that basically falsely accuse me of a serious crime being made public because therefore people will get to then report what you are falsely accused of and that’s just wrong for anyone,” Mr Christensen said in a story published in this masthead on October 21.

Eight days later he made his third “in confidence” submission to the Office of the Information Commissioner.

The October 29 submission was sent three days after the Freedom of Information fight was raised at Senate Estimates. Mr Christensen made two previous “in confidence” submissions to the OAIC in February and April this year and he has requested the submissions remain private.

The matter has been with the Information Commissioner for a decision for more than a year and has received evidence from the country’s spy watchdog, the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security, after the AFP argued releasing the letter could be a risk to national security.

During estimates hearings Information Commissioner Angelene Falk was asked if officers ever had to consult national security agencies on the release of documents relating to any other politicians, and she said: “there are none that come to mind”.

Federal Police rejected the original Freedom of Information application on grounds it would involve an “unreasonable disclosure of personal information”.

The MP was dubbed “The Member for Manila” by colleagues after it was revealed he spent 294 days in the Philippines between April 2014 and his last visit in June 2018.

Mr Christensen, who has a Filipina wife, has always claimed to be the victim of a “vile” smear campaign over the scrutiny of his travel.

The AFP looked into his travel for more than a year, which included frequent visits to Angeles City – an urbanised area more than 80km north of the capital Manila that is known for its red-light district – but found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
