Hmm. They made a convincing argument that the phsyical description didn't match. Another person has confessed to the crime and admitted to hiding the gun in Julius' house, wrapped in Julius' bandana. The bandana which of course has his DNA.
Pretty fucking weak case IMO. Beyond reasonalbe doubt means beyond reasonable doubt. The fact they had him 'dead to rights' on 'purely racial' charges is indeed the problem. What about actual justice? Why is the confessor to the crime not on death row?
If he declares mistrial it will 'feel' like injustice to all the angry mobsters. No doubt he is hoping for a guilty conviction despite all the fuckery.
