Firstly, Satchel Paige was the poster child for a Black that was treated unjustly by segregation.
He didn't make it to the bigs until his mid-40's. He still won 118 games, a lot of that pitching for the St. Louis Browns, who weren't that good. IOW, what would he have been if he was in the bigs in his prime? Paige was also a very popular player. Crowd favorite. A showman. Eephus pitch, for example.
Secondly, Brandon is associating a person who was neglected in his prime to himself, IMO. Still pumping the story of his being a a down and out kid who finally made it, but shoulda, woulda coulda, marred his real greatness. Makes him look delusional, though. He may think people didn't get it the first time, so he has to repeat it. In actuality, people did get it, they just think he's an asshole. Paige wasn't.
