A blue bird pin reinforced Ambassador Albrightโ€™s approach to sending messages with her jewelry. On February 24, 1996, Cuban fighter pilots shot down two unarmed civilian aircraft over international waters between Cuba and Florida. In their official transcripts, the pilots boasted about destroying the cojones of their victims. Albright immediately denounced the murders, saying, โ€œThis is not cojones, it is cowardice.โ€ She also wore her blue bird pin with its head pointing down, in mourning for the four Cuban-American fliers killed in the tragedy.

SWEARING-IN AS SECRETARY OF STATE, 1997

On December 5, 1996, President Clinton nominated Madeleine Albright to serve as the countryโ€™s sixty-fourth Secretary of State. She was sworn in on January 23, 1997. In honor of the occasion, she acquired this antique eagle pin. To her subsequent dismay, she failed to notice that the complicated clasp was not fastened properly. At the rehearsal just outside the Oval Office, the pin was attached, but during the formal ceremony, the eagle was barely hanging on.

> I don't see her patented Satan pin

On good days, when I wanted to project prosperity and happiness, I'd put on suns, ladybugs, flowers, and hot-air balloons that signified high hopes. On bad days, I'd reach for spiders and carnivorous animals. If the progress was slower than I liked during a meeting in the Middle East, I'd wear a snail pin. And when I was dealing with crabby people, I put on a crab. Other ambassadors started to notice, and whenever they asked me what I was up to on any given day, I would tell them, "Read my pins."

"When I was dealing with crabby people, I put on a crab."

There have been so many other meaningful ones over the years โ€” the vintage eagle that I wore when I took the oath of office as secretary of state, the zebra I wore with [President] Nelson Mandela in South Africa, the beautiful amethyst pin given to me by a retired military service member who earned two Purple Hearts. I also have a series of pins that celebrate women's issues. One is a glass ceiling pin that has obvious symbolism. It is important to me, not just for the things that I was able to do [as the first female secretary of state], but also I wore it when Secretary [Hillary] Clinton was running for president [in 2016]. It shows the glass ceiling in its ideal condition โ€” which is shattered.
