Underwood to take down House of Cards?
Exactly two weeks after the resignation of Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, Barbara D. Underwood will be appointed Tuesday afternoon to fill the post through the end of the year.
Underwood, who until Schneiderman’s fall served as the state’s solicitor general, will be the first woman to serve as New York’s attorney general.
Legislative leaders have passed a resolution scheduling a 3 p.m. meeting of the state Assembly and Senate to jointly cast their votes for interim attorney general.
The New York State constitution requires the Legislature to cast a joint ballot to fill the vacancy in the office of the attorney general for the term that expires at the end of December. Schneiderman resigned May 8, one day after the publication of an article in The New Yorker in which four women alleged he used physical violence against them.
Underwood was sworn in as acting attorney general after Schneiderman’s resignation became official.
A bicameral, bipartisan vetting committee headed by Democratic Assemblyman Joe Lentol of Brooklyn interviewed 12 candidates in over two days last week.
