Eugenio Gaudio refuses to apologise after Italian academic accuses him of ‘insulting spectacle for women scholars’
Some of Italy’s top female academics are demanding an apology from the rector of the Sapienza University of Rome for participating in the jury of a Miss University pageant to select the “most beautiful and wise” student.
Eugenio Gaudio headed the pageant jury, in which participants submitted information about their subjects and grades – along with their height, bust and waist size.
A dozen female professors led by economist Mariana Mazzucato of the University of Sussex wrote an open letter to Gaudio over the weekend saying his participation represented a “scandalous stain” on the university and “demonstrates how backward our society is”.

Gaudio refused to apologise, noting that his two predecessors also participated in the pageant and that, regardless, the contestants “were not in bathing suits but in evening dresses”.

The recognition for the Sapienza University of Rome was conferred by the Committee for Academic Qualifications of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, on the proposal of theZhongnan University of Economics and Law of Wuhanfor the efforts made inweaving relations between Italy and China.

The rector of Sapienza, Eugenio Gaudio, has been awarded by the Chinese government the Honorary Doctoral Degree for his commitment to promoting international cooperation between China and Italy.
The title of Honorary Doctoral Degree in Economics and Law was conferred by the Academic Qualifications Committee of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, on the proposal of the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law in Wuhan, with the following motivation: "The Government of the People's Republic of China is honored to recognize and attest to the important role you have played in promoting international cooperation at the highest levels in the academic field between China and Italy".
The Doctoral Degree is reserved for internationally recognized personalities in promoting the global dimension of cooperation with the People's Republic. Former UN Secretaries General Kofi Annan and Boutros-Ghali, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, former President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch and President of the University of Oxford, Colin Lucas, have received the honour.
"Receiving this recognition is an attestation of esteem also towards the University that I am honored to lead since 2014, said the Rector, "the international dimension has distinguished these years of rectorate and the strengthening of relations with China is one of the fundamental points of this path. As President Xi Jinping pointed out during his recent visit to Italy, one of the reasons that make our countries similar to each other is that both look to the future but at the same time are rich in a glorious past and embody lifestyles that integrate ancient and modern, classicism and innovation".
In almost ten years, Sapienza, where for years a Faculty of Oriental Studies has been active, has welcomed more than 2,200 Chinese students enrolled in the various courses of study Last year also, on the occasion of the Italian adhesion to the New Silk Road, it was inaugurated in Wuhan at the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, the Italian-Chinese Institute chaired by Oliviero Diliberto, professor of Roman Law and dean of the Faculty of Law of Sapienza. Asettembre has started the first master's degree course in European Studies, Private comparative Law in China. The course, which will issue the Sapienza degree, is currently enrolled in 26 Chinese students.
