Good choice. It did take him until old age to finally come to terms with church being somewhat a necessity for a majority in society. I personally suspect he maintained his criticisms for the institution. We may never know his true thoughts as he likely realized most of his life's work would be discussed in future history books, and he was an expert at writing to an audience.
