So statues of historical figures probably won't qualify, unless they're being worshipped.

One should never forget the past, and what is happening now is the erasing of history.

having historical statues isn't the same as idol worship

Idolatry is the worship of an idol as though it were God. In Abrahamic religions idolatry connotes the worship of something or someone other than the Abrahamic god as if it were God.

Lord actually instructed the Israelites to store those very commandments, carved in stone, within a sacred container (ark) to be decorated with golden images of angelic beings called cherubim (see Ex 25:10-22). He also commanded the people to decorate the places where they worshiped with gold, bronze, and wooden images of animals and plants (see Ex 25:33-36; 26:1; 1 Kgs 6:23-7:51; 2 Chr 3:10-4:22

 

Also research the Temple of Solomon, was crowded with statues, all commanded to be made by God Himself!
