Police seize cache of guns, bombs from property on Sydney's outskirts

Police say a doomsday prepper who allegedly amassed dozens of guns and 250 kilograms of explosive material at his home on Sydney's outskirts put the community at risk of a "catastrophic event".

Simon Mitchell Clay, 42, was arrested during a raid of his Kurrajong property yesterday morning and charged with a range of weapons offences carrying significant jail time.

Police will allege officers seized a cache of weapons including 40 firearms, seven improvised bombs, silencers, stun guns, detonators, thousands of rounds of ammunition and up to 77 knives.

Detective Superintendent John Watson said police would allege Mr Clay "was manufacturing weapons himself at the property".

NSW Police had never made a seizure of "alarming items" of this magnitude before, Detective Superintendent Watson said.

"There is no doubt in our minds this matter posed a significant risk to this individual, his family but also the community at large," he said.

"The potential for a catastrophic event has been averted through the seizure and arrest of this particular person."

Police claim they seized chemicals and bomb-making literature during the raid of the rural property.

Mr Clay has been charged with six offences, including possessing more than three unregistered firearms including a prohibited pistol, manufacturing firearms without a licence and possessing or using a prohibited weapon.

He was refused bail and is expected to appear before Penrith Local Court today.

Comrade Down: Senate Forces Biden to Dump OCC Nominee, Lenin Scholar

Five Senate Democrats tell Biden they won't back Lenin scholarship winner Saule Omarova

Five Senate Democrats told the White House late Wednesday they will not support Lenin scholarship recipient Saule Omarova to serve as Comptroller of the Currency, nuking her chances to serve as the country’s bank regulator.

The Democrats—Sens. Jon Tester (D., Mont.), Kyrsten Sinema (D., Ariz.), Mark Kelly (D., Ariz.), Mark Warner (D., Va.), and John Hickenlooper (D., Colo.)—join all Senate Republicans in opposition to Omarova, who came under scrutiny over her proposals to use the banking system to "bankrupt" the oil and gas industry and her education in the Soviet Union. Axios reported Wednesday that the Democrats informed the White House they will not support Biden's nominee.

The failed nomination marks a major setback for progressives, who championed Omarova over her criticism of big banks and fossil fuel companies. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) hailed Omarova’s nomination as "tremendous news." The left-wing Sierra Club touted Omarova as a bulwark against "climate chaos" and hoped she would set up "guardrails against Wall Street's risky fossil fuel investments."

Omarova faced questions about her academic history throughout the confirmation process. Omarova in recent years scrubbed her resume of references to a thesis she wrote about Karl Marx while studying on a Lenin scholarship at Moscow State University in the 1980s. Omarova disavowed the thesis at her confirmation hearing this month, but said she did not have a copy of the document.

Omarova was arrested in 1995 on charges she stole $214 in merchandise from a T.J. Maxx store in Madison, Wisc., where she was studying for her doctorate degree.

New ‘Rittenhouse law’ would hold prosecutors accountable

An Oklahoma state senator has introduced legislation that would force the state to compensate defendants accused of murder but later found not guilty due to justifiable homicide, and named it ‘Kyle's law’ after Kyle Rittenhouse.

Introduced on Tuesday by State Senator Nathan Dahm, a Republican who is running for the US Senate, ‘Kyle’s Law’ would force Oklahoma to cover the legal fees and damages incurred by anyone accused of murder but found to have been acting in self-defense, if the defendant could prove they were the victim of “malicious prosecution.”

“With the Kyle Rittenhouse trial we’ve seen the impact prosecutors can have on our rights being attacked & possibly taken away for political reasons,” Dahm tweeted, adding that his new legislation would also make prosecutors “personally liable” for pursuing such cases.

Last week, a Wisconsin jury found Rittenhouse not guilty of first-degree homicide, attempted homicide and reckless endangerment, charges stemming from his shooting dead of two men and wounding of another during Black Lives Matter protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin last August. All three shootings were captured on video, and this footage combined with witness testimony convinced the jury that Rittenhouse acted in self-defense.

The template for ‘Kyle’s Law’ was drawn up by Andrew Branca, an attorney specializing in the law of self-defense, in the wake of Rittenhouse’s acquittal. Branca’s proposed law would be groundbreaking in that it would compel prosecutors to personally compensate defendants and their families for mental and emotional distress and reputational damage suffered during a case.

At present, no state has such a law on its books, while only one – Washington – allows the victims of such prosecutions to claim compensation from the state.

“Only by holding the state generally and the prosecutor personally both responsible for such cases of unjust persecution of self-defense cases can we keep these victims of violent attack from also becoming victims of an assaultive justice system,” Branca wrote.

While Dahm is currently attempting to convince more Oklahoma lawmakers to co-author his bill, it likely stands a better chance of becoming law there than elsewhere. Oklahoma has a Republican governor, is considered a gun-friendly state, and the GOP controls both houses of its state legislature by wide margins.
