At least 27 people die attempting to cross the English Channel
The fatal crossing occurred off the coast of France near Calais on Wednesday. The death toll, which was revised from 31 to 27 people, includes 17 men, seven women - one of whom was pregnant - and three children. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin described the dinghy they were travelling in as "like a pool you blow up in your garden". Five people have been arrested in connection with the fatal crossing, which is the worst single loss of life in the Channel since the International Organization for Migration's records began in 2014. Home Secretary Priti Patel is set to make a statement later on Thursday.
