Expand Five Eyes to Nine? That's Four Too Many

The proposed expansion would force the original members to stop spying on the new ones.

The U.S. Senate is expected to take up the must-pass defense authorization bill right after the Thanksgiving break. When they do, they should strip out the very bad idea of expanding the historic “Five Eyes” intelligence agreement between the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, to become a “Nine Eyes” partnership that includes India, Germany, Japan, and Korea.

The idea was put forth by Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., the Armed Services Subcommittee for Special Operations and Intelligence chairman. Gallego said earlier this month that including these nations would allow the United States to better confront China, while also opening up the English-speaking club to a wider group of nations. He suggested that there are base cultural factors at play that are “just xenophobic about sharing information with largely Asian, non-Anglo nations.”

Five Eyes is not only an intelligence-sharing agreement among five countries, but also an agreement not to spy on each other. It’s hard to overstate how radical a departure this was from the rest of history where it was reasonably assumed that everyone was spying on everyone else.

Digging on Ruben Gallego now.

New Zealand PM Ardern Backs Five Eyes, Open to Other Alliances

Nov. 26, 2021, at 2:44 a.m.

(Reuters) - New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern expressed support on Friday for its Five Eyes alliance with Australia, Britain, Canada and the United States, but said her country would also consider other economic alliances in the Pacific region.

New Zealand has faced increasing pressure from some elements among Western allies over its reluctance to use the Five Eyes intelligence and security alliance to criticise its top trading partner, China.

"We do have important alliances we are part of and we consider fit for purpose and we consider need to be used for the functions for which they were originally established," Ardern said in an interview.

"Beyond that, we consider that there's benefit to seeing a range of other actors in our region showing greater interest, not just in the strategic environment but the economic architecture for example of our region," she added.

"We welcome other countries becoming more closely aligned through multilateral trade agreements, through bilateral trade agreements."

New Zealand for sale? Intelligence for trade agreements? China will surely take advantage.

Definitely something to keep an eye on… Would be very convenient for the cabal to cut comms off this week.

At the same time, I've lost count of how many of these warnings have come and gone without anything of significance happening.

KEYSTONE

New York Fed Research Library

Over the years, the Federal Reserve System has used many methods to communicate about the role it plays in support of stable prices, full employment, and financial stability. Current communication tools include the new press conferences by the Chairman, speeches by Bank presidents, public websites, economic education programs, local outreach efforts, publications, and blogs like this one.

Ninety years ago, however, the options were more limited. The Fed was still new and the nation’s economy was plagued by a growing number of bank failures. The five posters below (from the mid-1920s), with their images of strength and stability, were part of a larger series designed for display at member banks. They were likely intended to inform the public about the Federal Reserve System and foster confidence in its member banks.

Thanks to the San Francisco Fed archive for making the posters available.

US lawmakers defy warnings from China to make surprise trip to Taiwan

November 26, 2021 10:23am

A bipartisan group of US lawmakers made a surprise visit to Taiwan on Friday — defying “blunt” warnings from China to stay away from the hotly contested island it considers part of its territory.

The four Democrats and one Republican arrived to meet Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen at a time when the self-governing island’s tensions with China have risen to their highest level in decades.

Michigan Democrat Rep. Elissa Slotkin said that when news of her visit broke, her office “received a blunt message from the Chinese Embassy, telling me to call off the trip.”

But “we’re here to learn about the region and reaffirm the U.S. commitment to our hosts, the Taiwanese,” Slotkin tweeted.

Nancy Mace, the only Republican in the group, tweeted a similar message, saying that “China’s embassy demanded we cancel the trip (we didn’t).”
