6.56  Verification of voters not appearing on list.

(3m) As soon as possible after all information relating to registrations after the close of registration for an election is entered on the registration list following the election under s. 6.33 (5) (a), the commission shall compare the list of new registrants whose names do not appear on the poll lists for the election because the names were added after the commission certified the poll lists for use at the election with the list containing the names transmitted to the commission by the department of corrections under s. 301.03 (20m) as of election day. If the commission finds that the name of any person whose name appears on the list transmitted under s. 301.03 (20m) has been added to the registration list, the commission shall enter on the list the information transmitted to the commission under s. 301.03 (20m) and shall notify the district attorney for the county where the polling place is located that the person appears to have voted illegally at the election.

Virginia Guard task force begins federal active duty for Africa mission

Virginia units from Bedford, Charlottesville, Lexington, Pulaski and Suffolk and a Kentucky unit from Somerset, Kentucky, are mobilizing as Task Force Red Dragon under the command of the Lynchburg-based 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. They will provide security in support of Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa in the largest VNG single-unit mobilization since World War II.

Why?

From NPR: The Biden administration's envoy for the Horn of Africa is very busy these days. A civil war in Ethiopia has been going on for about a year. And that country is scheduled to lose its American trade preferences because of the war. Meanwhile, in Sudan, military leaders staged a coup last week, which upended that country's path to democracy.

So what are the current goals for the U.S. in that region?

This is an area of enormous importance. And you've got two countries that are embroiled in conflict and war. And the entire stability of the region depends on them getting out of that war. And that's what the U.S. envoy is trying to help them do.

(CNN) Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter, an outspoken critic of human rights issues, will become a US citizen Monday and legally change his name to Enes Kanter Freedom, the NBA player told CNN's John Berman.

Moving forward, "Freedom" will be Kanter's last name, and Kanter will be his middle name. Kanter told CNN his new last name comes from what his teammates have been calling him.

Earlier this week, Kanter, who was raised in Turkey, told Fox News he passed his citizenship test and would be sworn in as an American citizen at the end of the month.

In recent months, the 11-year NBA veteran has used social media and specially designed clothing during NBA games to bring awareness to and criticize China's treatment of the Uyghur community. The US State Department estimates as many as 2 million Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities have been detained in internment camps in China's Xinjiang province since 2017. China has repeatedly denied accusations of human rights abuses in the country.

Brandon police chief resigns to pursue new opportunity

BRANDON, Vt. (AP) - The police chief in Brandon is leaving the job next month to pursue another opportunity.

Christopher Brickell says his last day as chief will be on Dec. 17. He has been with the town of Brandon for 17 years.

Brickell says he’s had a long good run and it’s time for the community to have a different perspective from a new chief.

Brickell says the department is also losing Lt. Rodney Pulsifer who plans to retire in December after a long career.
