The Spanish National Police have arrested eight people for allegedly distributing and possessing child sexual material through an instant messaging application. The arrests were carried out in the provinces of Almería, Barcelona, Córdoba, Gerona, Madrid, Seville and Toledo.
Sources from the Directorate General of Police explained that the investigation began after receiving, through Europol, information related to several investigations carried out by the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The complaint of the company, owner of a social network, to the security forces of the North American country had alerted that several users of its application had distributed audiovisual material of child sexual exploitation from their accounts. As a result, the company proceeded to block the addresses of the suspects.
In this way, the National Police agents identified eight users located in Spain who allegedly shared child sexual material on the social network. One of those arrested is a coach of a basketball team of minors.
More than 39 gigabytes of child sexual material were found at his home in various computer devices, although the on-site analysis of the material found no evidence of self-produced child sexual abuse content. However, according to the National Police, there were no files of the minors with whom the suspect was in contact.
During the operation, the agents seized thirteen cell phones, two tablets, three hard disks, a USB memory stick, a laptop and a desktop computer.
