The ancient pagan idolatry of the near East can trace it's lineage back to the worship of Nimrod, who was a ruler (or King: Molech) who declared himself to be a God man (El), and as such was the owner (Ba'al/Lord)of the whole Earth, and was demonstrated by what became the image associated tales of religious antiquities, and the forming of idols.
