Paris archbishop asks for forgiveness, quits over relationship

PARIS (Reuters) - France's Catholic Church said on Thursday the pope had accepted the resignation of Paris archbishop Michel Aupetit who asked for forgiveness after reports over a relationship with a woman.

The 70-year-old cleric, who is bound by the church's celibacy rule, has denied any intimate relationship with the unnamed woman in comments to Le Point magazine, though he acknowledged his behaviour may have been ambiguous.

"I have been deeply troubled by the attacks on me … I pray for those who, maybe, have wished bad things onto me, as Christ has taught us," he said in a statement on Thursday.

"I ask forgiveness from those I might have hurt."

Aupetit's departure comes as the Catholic Church in France is reeling from the publication in October of an investigation showing that clerics sexually abused more than 200,000 children over the past 70 years.

The archdiocese of Paris, one of 15 archdioceses in France, is in charge of the Ile-de-France region around the capital.

SHUT IT DOWN! ENOUGH!

McConnell pushed back against the idea of a government shutdown to derail Biden's vaccine mandate, as threats by the GOP's right test his power

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was cautiously optimistic about the prospects of averting a government shutdown by some Republican senators seeking to defund President Joe Biden's vaccine mandate.

"I think we're going to be okay," he said when asked Wednesday about the prospect of a shutdown, which would see federal agencies and programs begin to run out of funding unless a deal can be reached by midnight Friday.

McConnell's statement was a subtle shift from his confident position the previous day, when he told reporters: "Nobody should be concerned about a government shutdown."

The last-minute crisis was partly caused by a group of right-wing GOP senators, who on Wednesday upended weeks of delicate discussions between McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on a stopgap deal to fund the government into the new year.

The senators, which include Sens. Mike Lee, Ted Cruz, and Ron Johnson, are threatening that unless Democrats strip funding from Biden's mandate for large companies to get their employees vaccinated by January, they will block passage of the government-funding bill, meaning federal agencies will close down.

It was unclear how many GOP senators support a measure blocking the funding bill, but it could be as many as 11, which is the number of senators who signed a letter vowing to "use all means at our disposal to oppose" Biden's mandate. (Under Senate rules, the objection of just one senator could delay the vote.)

McConnell would not provide details on Wednesday of discussions between the Republicans who oppose a shutdown, and those who back it.

Politico reported that in a Wednesday meeting of the Republican caucus, the idea of bringing a bill to defund the vaccine mandate to the Senate floor next week was touted as a plausible alternative route for Republicans seeking to express their opposition, but avoid the potential costs of a shutdown.

But the crisis exposes a rift that has opened between McConnell and the right wing of the GOP, and a test on McConnell's grip on power.

McConnell, who had polio as a child, has urged Americans to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and expressed surprise at the strength of vaccine hesitancy in the US.

Meanwhile, some GOP senators, including Cruz and Johnson, have pushed misinformation about the vaccine and rallied around opposition to Biden's vaccine mandate.

Many of the senators on the GOP right are ardent supporters of former President Donald Trump, and likely feel emboldened by Trump's recent insult-laden attacks on McConnell, who has accused Trump of inciting the January 6 riot.

McConnell has declined to openly criticize senators in the GOP pushing vaccine misinformation, but, according to reports, sees little political gain in forcing a shutdown over vaccine mandates.

He has in recent weeks sounded bullish over the prospect of averting a shutdown and a second crisis over raising the government debt ceiling. That issue needs to be resolved by December 15 to avert an economically catastrophic US government debt default.

But his capacity to make good on the pledges will depend in his ability to rein in dissidents in his party, and time is running out.

Michigan school shooting, more threats prompt multiple districts to cancel classes

Multiple school districts in suburban Detroit will be closed Thursday due to threats of more violence in the wake of the tragic Oxford High School shooting that left four dead.

Bloomfield Hills School District Superintendent Pat Watson wrote in a notice published at 11 p.m. Wednesday that its schools would be closed after “BHS and other communities across the region have received numerous reports of threats of violence circulating on social media.”

“Out of an abundance of caution, all BHS schools will be closed on Thursday,” he said, noting that the district is in contact with Bloomfield Township Police over the rumors.

Holly Area Schools also announced their schools will be closed Thursday and Friday “out of an abundance of caution” following “multiple reports of a potential shooting threat against Holly Area Schools that have been posted on social media," District Superintendent Scott Roper and Holly Police Chief Jerry Narsh said in a joint statement.

A joint investigation was launched with the district and the Holly Police Department, which produced “no source for the original threat" and deemed the threat as “not credible due to a lack of evidence.”

Other systems that will be closed Thursday include Troy Schools, Rochester Community Schools, Brandon School District, Walled Lake Consolidated Schools, Lake Orion Community Schools, Clawson Public Schools, Warren Consolidated Schools, Hazel Park Schools, Avondale School District, West Bloomfield School District and Lamphere Schools.

The Oxford Community Schools, the Oakland County district where the shooting took place, will be closed through the rest of the week, officials said in a post on the system's website.

"As we grapple with the horrific tragedy in our school community, we grieve the students who lost their lives and we ache for all those who have been injured and impacted. We appreciate the heartfelt outpouring of support we have received from across our community, our state, and our nation," the district said in a statement.

In addition to the four fatalities, the Tuesday shooting at Oxford High School left seven other people, including a teacher, seriously wounded.

The suspect was identified as Ethan Crumbley, 15, on Wednesday. He was charged as an adult with four counts of first-degree murder, one count of terrorism causing death, seven counts of assault with intent to murder and 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said at a news conference Wednesday that the shooting was planned and was “not just an impulsive act.”
