PITTSBURGH, PA — Allegheny County has begun terminating unvaccinated employees who missed an inoculation deadline imposed by county Executive Rich Fitzgerald.
"Those unvaccinated employees who have no pending accommodation or exemption requests have been disqualified as a county employee," a county news release stated. "Due to their disqualification, their employment with the county has been terminated."
Because some employees are still being notified, the county did not immediately have available the number who are being fired. The county noted that because the terminations are both a personnel and legal matter, only limited information will be provided on the firings.
As of Thursday morning, more than 94 percent of county employees have submitted paperwork regarding their vaccination status. The remaining percentage are either unvaccinated or are working through the accommodation and exemption request process with human resources officials.
A small protest was held outside of Fitzgerald's Squirrel Hill home Wednesday evening. He announced in September that employees who did not get vaccinated or were granted an exemption by Dec. 1 risked termination.
