Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus

Biden pick to lead CBP reportedly balked at Trump immigration policies

April 13, 2021

"President Biden’s nominee to head up Customs and Border Protection has backed Black Lives Matter, defended sanctuary cities and pushed back at Trump administration orders to round up and deport undocumented immigrants, according to reports.

Chris Magnus, the police chief of Tucson, Ariz., has also rejected border security money from the Department of Homeland Security’s Operation Stonegarden in 2020, sparking criticism from Tucson Police Officers Association head Tony Archibald, Fox News and the Daily Mail reported.

The grants were earmarked to assist with border enforcement, but Magnus, 60, objected to them because the funds couldn’t be used to help asylum seekers.

“For years, this federally funded grant has paid for officer overtime to do proactive, on-site activity in high-crime areas,” Archibald said at the time, according to reports in the Arizona Daily Star.

“The Stonegarden deployments have resulted in hundreds of arrests that would not have occurred without this federal money. Additionally, the Stonegarden deployments have taken countless guns and drugs off the streets of Tucson,” Archibald continued.

“Without these federally funded overtime deployments, an already understaffed police department will have a hard time addressing these crime issues.”

A few years earlier, Magnus balked at implementing then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions immigration policies, writing in a New York Times op-ed that they targeted sanctuary cities.

“As the police chief here, I’m deeply troubled by the Trump administration’s campaign against ‘sanctuary cities,’ which refuse to turn over undocumented immigrants to federal authorities. Washington is trying to retaliate against them by withholding funding for things like crime prevention, drug treatment and mental health programs,” Magnus wrote in the 2017 piece.

“Almost all local law enforcement agencies, regardless of the ‘sanctuary’ or ‘immigrant-welcoming’ policies adopted by their jurisdictions, cooperate with federal authorities to go after drug cartels, human traffickers and transnational gangs,” Magnus continued.

“Justice Department grants and other federal support funded through our taxes should not be tied to immigration policies.”

While Tucson isn’t a sanctuary city, Magnus said its leaders “take pride in being welcoming to immigrants.”

He also slammed the Trump administration’s hardline stance on immigration.

“The harsh anti-immigrant rhetoric and Mr. Session’s reckless policies ignore a basic reality known by most good cops and prosecutors,” Magnus wrote. “If people are afraid of the police, if they fear they may become separated from their families or harshly interrogated based on their immigration status, they won’t report crimes or come forward as witnesses.”

Before heading up the police department in Tucson, Magnus was the top cop in Fargo, N.D., and Richmond, Calif., where he was known “as a progressive police leader who focused on relationship-building between the police and the community,” officials said about him, according to the Daily Mail.

While in Richmond, Magnus “implemented evidence-based best practices, promoted reform, and insisted on police accountability,” an official told the website.

He's gay, he's "progressive", he prefers an unchecked invasion to border security so he checks several boxes except Trans.

These people need help.
