Official story is than unaltered images are boring and the public wants pretty pictures, which are required for further funding. If people don't get pretty taxes they vote against nasa. but i don't buy it, i just want us to goto space and do real research that gets released to the public, but that doens't happen much, we get fake pictures instead.
