The camera used was a Hasselblad 500 medium format, the lens would be of note since the perspective of this image is obviously foreshortened due to what I would assume is a telephoto lens.

Also consider that he later became the inspiration for Dracula, and consequently became confused with it. They say you can judge a society by the monsters they create (Frankenstein - the fear of scientific revolution etc.)
