Global money muling operation stings Australians

Eighteen Australians have been charged under a global money-laundering sting led in Australia by the AFP, which has also prevented $2.6 million of dirty cash washing through the country's financial institutions.

The AFP-led Taskforce DOLOS partnered with Europol's seventh annual global anti-money mule operation, known as European Money Mule Action 7 (EMMA7), leading to 1803 arrests around the world.

In Australia, the 18 alleged offenders have been charged by New South Wales Police Force, Queensland Police, Western Australia Police and Victoria Police.

AFP cybercrime investigators, in conjunction with Taskforce DOLOS, also stopped more than $2.6 million from being laundered through Australian financial institutions.

Twenty-seven money mules were identified in Australia, with two allegedly the head of money laundering organisations. Money mules are used by criminals to transfer money, usually cash from the proceeds of crime.

Nine warning letters have been issued to individuals to informing them to cease conducting activities suspected to be associated with money laundering

Police, financial analysts and cybercrime experts from around Australia worked with the AFP to crackdown on money mules.

Law enforcement agencies from 27 countries, financial institutions and industry partners worked together during the operation, which ran from 15 September to 30 November 2021.

EMMA7 brought together law enforcement agencies from 27 countries, financial institutions and industry partners to target money laundering activity.

AFP Acting Commander Cybercrime Ben Case said criminals would use a wide range of tactics to convince people to launder money, including romance and job scams.

"International students are a common target of money mule networks however this is a warning to everyone, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. If you're being promised a pay check for simply moving money between accounts, converting money to cryptocurrency and moving it to another wallet or an online romantic partner is asking you to transfer funds on their behalf, then it is more than likely a scam," Acting Commander Case said.

McConnell in Private Talks with Schumer to Waive Filibuster to Raise Debt Ceiling – McCarthy, Several Republican Senators Push Back

According to CNN reporter Manu Raju, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is in private talks with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to waive the filibuster to raise the debt ceiling.

The process would be complicated but McConnell is entertaining the idea to give Joe Biden and the Democrats another win.

The House would have to approve a rule for the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the annual budget for the Pentagon – and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is NOT on board.

Final decision has not been made on if they go this route” Mr. Raju said.

House Democrats are considering three options to raise the debt ceiling according to Manu Raju:

1) Pass NDAA. Then pass a separate bill to create one-time, fast-track process to allow debt ceiling to be increased by 51 votes in Senate

2) Tie both debt limit process bill and NDAA together

3) They pass separately, but are tied together by rule and sent to Senate

The Democrats have already used reconciliation to pass trillions in spending without Republican votes and instead of pushing back, McConnell works with Schumer to give Biden another win.

Dan Andrews sets MANDATORY gender quotas on construction sites - as part of an effort to get more women into the industry that's 'dominated by blokes'

Gender quotas to encourage more women into construction industry in Victoria

Daniel Andrews' Building Equality Policy comes into effect from January 1

Women currently make up 2.5 per cent of building and construction workers

More women have been urged to pick up the tools and enter the construction industry in a policy overhaul by Daniel Andrews.

The Victorian Premier has announced mandatory gender quotas on major construction sites for new government projects worth $20 million or more, set to come into effect from January 1.

The landmark gender quota for the male-dominated industry has been hailed as an Australian-first.

Women currently represent just 2.5 per cent of building and construction trades workers in Victoria.

It means that women must represent at least three per cent of jobs in each trade role on a project, four per cent of apprentices and trainees, seven per cent for each non-trade position, and 35 per cent of management, supervisor and specialist labour roles under the Building Equality Policy.

'We need to make women aware that construction is an attractive and viable career option – and these targets will ensure women are proactively included and stay in the industry, with stronger career pathways,' transport infrastructure minister Jacinta Allan said.

'Greater diversity makes our workplaces stronger – and greater representation of women in construction will benefit everyone in the industry.'

How Daniel Andrews was WARNED Victoria's endless lockdowns were responsible for a staggering 'one in 10' of all suicides - as premier declares his handling of the pandemic 'a triumph'

Court data reveals almost 10 per cent of suicides in Victoria linked to lockdowns

Daniel Andrews and government warned of spike in suicides due to restrictions

Accused by shadow mental health minister Emma Kealy of 'gross negligence'

Comes after the Premier hailed state's response to the pandemic as a 'triumph'

Daniel Andrews and the Victorian government have been accused of 'gross negligence' amid claims they ignored court data that almost 10 per cent of suicides in 2020 were linked to Covid-19 lockdowns.

Shadow mental health minister Emma Kealy has slammed the Premier and his government for failing to act on the worrying data, which emerged as the state entered its fourth lockdown within 15 months in late May.

She has obtained a ministerial briefing note to mental health minister James Merlino under Freedom of Information laws which warned 'Covid-related stressors' were linked to a spike in Victorians taking their own lives.

The news comes after Mr Andrews hailed the state's response to the pandemic as a 'triumph', despite forcing millions of Melburnians to endure the world's longest lockdown.1

Switzerland Approves Assisted ‘Suicide Capsule’

Switzerland has just legalized a new way to die by assisted suicide. The country’s medical review board has authorized the use of the Sarco Suicide Pod, which is a 3-D-printed portable coffin-like capsule with windows that can be transported to a tranquil place for a person’s final moments of life.

Conventional assisted-suicide methods have generally involved a chemical substance. Inventor Philip Nitschke of Exit International told the website SwissInfo.ch that his “death pod” offers a different approach. “We want to remove any kind of psychiatric review from the process and allow the individual to control the method themselves,” he said. “Our aim is to develop an artificial-intelligence screening system to establish the person’s mental capacity. Naturally, there is a lot of skepticism, especially on the part of psychiatrists.”

The pod can be activated from inside and can give the person intending to die various options for where they want to be for their final moments. “The machine can be towed anywhere for the death,” he said. “It can be in an idyllic outdoor setting or in the premises of an assisted-suicide organization, for example.”

To qualify to use the pod, the person who wants to die must answer an online survey that is meant to prove whether they are making the decision of their own accord. If they pass, they will be told the location of the pod and given an access code.

Once inside, the person intending to end their life will have to answer pre-recorded questions and press a button that will start the process of flooding the interior with nitrogen, which will quickly reduce the oxygen level inside from 21 percent to 1 percent. “The person will get into the capsule and lie down,” he said, adding, “It’s very comfortable.”

White House Report Flags Hunter Biden’s Industry As Potential Hotbed For ‘Financial Crimes’

The White House flagged the art market as a potential vector for financial corruption in a report Monday, but it made no mention of the ethical concerns raised by watchdogs surrounding Hunter Biden’s newfound and lucrative career in the industry.

The report, which spelled out the federal government’s strategy to combat public corruption, said the markets for art and antiquities “are especially vulnerable to a range of financial crimes” such as illicit value transfer, sanctions evasion and corruption because of “built-in opacity, lack of stable and predictable pricing, and inherent cross-border transportability.”

The report comes less than two months after Biden reportedly sold at least five pieces of artwork for $75,000 apiece in Los Angeles, despite having no formal training or experience.

Biden, 51, became a full-time artist in 2019 after spending most of his professional life working in private equity, lobbying and law, The New York Times reported. Hunter Biden told Artnet News in June that he seeks to bring out “the universal truth” through his artwork.

“I don’t paint from emotion or feeling, which I think are both very ephemeral,” Biden said. “For me, painting is much more about kind of trying to bring forth what is, I think, the universal truth.”

“The universal truth is that everything is connected and that there’s something that goes far beyond what is our five senses and that connects us all,” he added. “The thing that really fascinates me is the connection between the macro and the micro, and how these patterns repeat themselves over and over.”

Multiple art critics told Politico that Biden’s artwork was fetching extreme valuations because of his name, not his artistic abilities.

“Paintings are only as valuable as what some customer will pay for ’em,” art critic Geoffrey Young told Politico. “He’s complexly famous, but not yet for art. Guess people will pay for a known last name.”

Numerous ethics experts have raised concerns that buyers of Biden’s artwork are trying to curry favor with the president, but the White House has pledged that the identities of the purchasers have been kept anonymous from both Hunter Biden and his father’s administration.

Syria says Israeli warplanes attacked Latakia port

Strikes would be a rare Israeli attack on port, a vital facility where much of Syria’s imports are brought into the war-torn country; no injuries reported

DAMASCUS, Syria — Syria’s military said Israeli warplanes fired missiles on the port of the coastal city of Latakia early Tuesday without inflicting any human losses.

Syria’s state media quoted an unnamed military official as saying that several missiles struck the containers area in the port setting some of them on fire. The official gave no further details.

It was a rare attack on the port of Latakia, a vital facility where much of Syria’s imports are brought into the war-torn country.

Syrian state TV reported that five explosions were heard in the port and a huge fire erupted in the containers area and fire engines have rushed to the port.

There was no comment from the Israeli military.

Israel has staged hundreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled Syria over the years but rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations. Some of the strikes in the past had targeted the main airport in the capital Damascus.

Israel has acknowledged, however, that it targets the bases of Iran-allied terror groups, such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah that has fighters deployed in Syria. It says it attacks arms shipments believed to be bound for the groups.

Hezbollah is fighting on the side of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces in the decade-old civil war.

Israel says Iranian presence on its northern frontier is a red line, justifying its strikes on facilities and weapons inside Syria.

Amid fallout from NSO scandal, Israel imposes new restrictions on cyber exports

Move comes after powerful Israeli-made surveillance tools reportedly used against journalists and activists by countries around the world under the guise of fighting terror, crimes

The Defense Ministry imposed new restrictions on the export of cyber warfare tools on Monday following a major international backlash over the use of Israeli-made surveillance software against journalists, activists and political rivals by human rights violators around the world.

This summer, an international consortium of journalists reported that the Israeli firm NSO Group had helped governments spy on dissidents and human rights workers. Last week, Reuters reported that NSO Group’s software had also been used to hack the phones of at least two American State Department workers in Uganda or those specializing in the East African country.

NSO insists its product was meant only to assist countries in fighting serious crime and terrorism. However, due to the broad definitions some countries use for these offenses, the software appears to have been used against a broad range of figures.

Apparently in response to that situation, the Defense Ministry’s Defense Export Control Agency released an updated version of its “end use/user certificate,” a form that must be filled by an Israeli firm looking to sell its products abroad, which more clearly defined what does and does not amount to terrorism and serious crimes, “in order to prevent a blurring of the definitions about this,” the ministry wrote in a statement.

The new form, for instance, explicitly states that “an act of expressing an opinion or criticism… shall not, in and of itself, constitute a Terrorist Act” or a “Serious Crime.”
