MENTAL health issues are common place and many people suffer with depression or anxiety.

But experts have now claimed that diabetes could actually have a negative impact on your mental health.

With type 1 diabetes, a person’s pancreas produces no insulin, but in type 2, cells in the body become resistant to insulin, so a greater amount of insulin is needed to keep blood glucose levels within a normal range.

Researchers looked at a group of people with type 2 diabetes and found that the risk of developing type 2 diabetes is increased for people who have most psychiatric disorders.

Previous research found that people with type 2 diabetes have higher rates of conditions like bipolar, schizophrenia and major depression, in comparison to the wider population.

Now experts at the University of Southern Denmark say that there are a broad range of mental health issues that could be suffered by people with diabetes.

Diabetes is rising at an alarming rate. One in 10 adults worldwide—537 million people—now live with the disease. This is higher than the 463 million adults who lived with the condition in 2019. It presents a significant global challenge to the health and well-being of individuals, families and societies. Diabetes now ranks among the top 10 causes of global mortality, responsible for an estimated 6.7 million deaths in 2021.

Africa account for 6% of these deaths. One in 22 (24 million) adults in Africa are living with diabetes.

The continent's highest prevalence rate (11.3%) is in South Africa, where one in nine adults have diabetes: 4.2 million people. Yet almost half are undiagnosed. This year South Africa is predicted to register 96,000 deaths due to diabetes and an estimated US$7.2 billion rise in diabetes-related health expenditure. This is a huge hit to the country's economy and equates to $1,700 per person.

LOUISVILLE, Ky — Glucose meters, insulin pumps and medical supplies are a part of life for the Chrisman family.

But it’s not for parents Natalie Chrisman and her husband, David. All three of their young children live with Type 1 diabetes

“When Quinby, our first daughter with Type 1 was diagnosed, we did not know what Type 1 diabetes (was). We just weren’t aware at all,” said Natalie Chrisman, the children's mother.

When identical twin, Quinby, was a year old her father said they noticed she was very thirsty and urinated frequently. So, they took her to the hospital. They checked her blood sugar and her dad, David Chrisman, said it was 650.

“Very elevated. They did a good job of immediately getting her hydrated, getting an IV in her and being able to get her blood sugar back down to the range it was supposed to be. So we were thankful for that part. Then after getting her stabilized, that’s when all of the learning came into play,” David Chrisman said.

Eventually, their other children, Ruthie and Stella, would both be diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes have different causes, but there are two factors that are important in both. You inherit a predisposition to the disease, then something in your environment triggers it.

That’s right: genes alone are not enough. One proof of this is identical twins. Identical twins have identical genes. Yet when one twin has type 1 diabetes, the other gets the disease, at most, only half the time. When one twin has type 2 diabetes, the other's risk is three in four at most.

A pair of new studies are reporting results from a landmark type 1 diabetes human clinical trial testing the safety and efficacy of an implantable device containing stem cells designed to mature into insulin-secreting cells. The experimental implant was found to be safe, well-tolerated and mildly effective, offering promising signs that with further optimization the treatment could present diabetics with a “functional cure.”

In 2017 researchers kicked off a Phase 1/2 human clinical trial testing an experimental implant designed to replace the missing insulin cells in type 1 diabetics. The device has been described as a “functional cure” for type 1 diabetes. This means it isn’t a direct cure, addressing the autoimmune roots of the disease, but rather it helps the body maintain normal blood sugar levels by compensating for missing insulin-producing cells.
