It is much easier to understand

If you look at plant first
And understand their structure
The stem of the plant has a spiral pattern
But if you look closely, it is invisible
You can easily see the vascular system, the xylem
Arranged in straight vertical lines
The layers of the stem like bark, also in vertical lines
But step back
Look at the arrangement of branches from the stem
These may be smaller stems branching out
Or they may be the tiny branch which attaches a leaf
Or a petal
To the core or stem of the plant
If a plant has 5-petal flowers
Then all the branches will be arranged in a 5-step
Spiral up the stem.
All the leaves will be attached in a 5-step spiral
And the last five leaves, will be the colored
Flower petals.
Moving up from any branch
The next one is one/fifth of the way around the stem
Until after 5 steps
The next branch that is in a vertical line
Is seen.
If the flower has 3 petals, then the branches
Follow a 3-step pattern
And so on.
Cabbage family flowers have 4 petals
So their stems are often in opposing pairs
The spiral is an architectural pattern of the plant
