"Galactic Britain": Boris Johnson's Reach for the Stars
British Prime Minister Johnson wants to build several spaceports in his country. This is for economic reasons and is expected to create hundreds of jobs. But above all, it's about prestige.
Grazing sheep, rugged cliffs, the roar of the waves: It doesn't get much more secluded than the far northeast of the British Isles.
And yet here on Unst, at what feels like the end of the world, the starting signal is soon to be given for a project that the already ambitious British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has given an ambitious name: "Galactic Britain.
The Shetland Space Centre is being built on the island of Unst, from which the U.S. company Lockheed Martin plans to launch an RS1 carrier rocket into space from British soil for the first time in 2022. Ultimately, there should be up to 30 such launches per year. Praising its "galactic" plan as a "bold new strategy," Johnson's government says it goes far beyond the Shetland Islands on the divide of the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean. "The days of the British space industry lounging on the launch pad are over," Johnson announces of his space strategy.
