High winds leave 210,000 without power in Canada's Ontario

Extreme winds hit the Canadian province of Ontario to plunge more than 280,000 homes and businesses into darkness, utility Hydro One (H.TO) said on Saturday, although power supplies were later restored to some.

The Toronto-listed company, which supplies electricity to about 1.4 million customers across the province, said it expected more outages until the winds subsided.

"Hydro One expects customers in the hardest-hit areas to be without power overnight, including southern, central and eastern Ontario," the company said in a statement.

"Significant damage has been reported, including broken poles, fallen trees and hazardous road conditions," it added, but did not elaborate.

Although power has been restored to 78,000 customers, about 210,000 still remain without electricity.

Environment and Climate Change Canada had also issued wind warnings for the southern regions of Ontario, cautioning against expected gusts of upto 120 kph (75 mph).

Separately, another Canadian utility, Alectra, said it had sent workers to restore power to customers across the Greater Toronto area, but added that some might be without power all night.

Between July and December of 2020, roughly 220,000 people were offered a dose of 0.2mg/kg/day (roughly 18mg for a 200lb person) as an optional treatment for 2 days, once every two weeks.

133,051 people took them up on it, while 87,466 did not.

OTTAWA—Defence Minister Anita Anand apologized to victims of military sexual misconduct on behalf of the federal government Monday, saying Ottawa has long failed to protect those who willingly signed up to protect Canada.

“I apologize to the thousands of Canadians who were harmed because your government did not protect you, nor did we ensure that the right systems were in place to ensure justice and accountability,” she said during the apology, which was streamed online.

“For far too long, your government failed to dedicate enough time, money, personnel and effort to deal with sexual harassment, sexual assault and discrimination based on sex, gender identity and sexual orientation in the military and the department.”

Anand’s address was one of three delivered to those affected by military sexual misconduct, with defence chief Gen. Wayne Eyre and Jody Thomas, the deputy minister at the Defence Department, also offering apologies on behalf of their respective institutions.

The apologies form a key part of the federal government’s $600-million settlement agreement in relation to several overlapping class-action lawsuits.

The federal Liberal government has faced criticism for not doing enough to address sexual misconduct in the ranks, including allegations against several senior military officers.

Earlier Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said it was important to make amends with those affected by such inappropriate, and at times illegal, behaviour. He said there is much more for the government to do to eradicate the problem.

Anand promised during the apology: “Things can change, they must change, and they will change. It is our most basic responsibility, our most important task, and my top and absolute priority.”

While the military has been criticized in the past for not doing enough to change its culture, Anand said she believed in the dedication of its current leaders to address the problem.

Speaking only for myself, I contracted a mild dose of fear in Spring 2020. I was bit worried for a while, waiting to see what would happen to us all. Within a few weeks I’d got over it, got over the fear. I’ve been immune to the state-sponsored fear ever since.

This year I caught COVID and got over that as well. Now I’m naturally immune, which is what I might have asked Santa for, if I’d thought of it.

Anyone planning parties and get togethers with family and friends this year – even members of Her Majesty’s government and Opposition, that’s fine by me and I hope you and they enjoy every moment.

CITV was issued a $5,000 administration penalty. So their lawyer, James Kitchen, flew into action and appealed it.

Pastors Rodney and Tracy Fortin have spent the pandemic playing defence against health authorities who wanted to barge in and inspect for COVID compliance.

When Rodney preached his sermons, Tracy would post up at the front door to keep the inspectors from disrupting people as they pray each Sunday.

Interrupting a church service is a violation of the Canadian Criminal Code, but the rule of that law wasn't one the province was willing to follow when checking for COVID compliance at churches where pastors refused to become an enforcement arm of the health ministry.

For protecting their flock, the Fortins were smacked with 12 counts of obstruction.

And the government started sending another agency to pester CITV — Occupational Health and Safety suddenly wanted to access the church to inspect it as a worksite, like a construction site or a welding shop!

Tracy was having none of that either, and blocked that inspection too.

And for that, CITV was issued a $5,000 administration penalty. So their lawyer, James Kitchen, flew into action and appealed the penalty.

A security guard, upon hearing my response regarding the vaccine passport, exclaimed loudly that I did not have a QR code and that someone needed to come deal with me!

Since the beginning of the pandemic, most Canadians have been waiting for a cure for COVID-19. On December 14, 2020 — almost a year ago, when mass vaccination began — we could never have expected life to be the way it is today.

Last October 15 was the deadline for healthcare workers to get vaccinated or lose their jobs. At the same time, on the same date, new restrictions for the unvaccinated were put in place. Anyone without the COVID shot was denied the right to visit and to be a caregiver in the hospital system.

However, even though this vaccination requirement was lifted for healthcare workers, the other measures on access to institutions were maintained.

Recently, I went to the hospital to pick up an acquaintance who needed a drive home. While there, a security guard, upon hearing my response regarding the vaccine passport, exclaimed loudly that I did not have a QR code and that someone needed to come deal with me!

EXCUSE ME?! What happened to privacy in all this?

I wanted to verify the code of ethics for Noctis' security guards, and also verify with the hospital to see what protocol they have in place to ensure the privacy of their staff, patients and visitors' medical information.

The Department of National Defence (DND) has confirmed that unvaccinated members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) who have not received exemptions or accommodations for the COVID-19 vaccine could face serious consequences for their careers.

According to a DND spokesperson, the vaccination mandate that went into effect in October applies to all CAF members “whether they telework or not,” and that those who do not comply with the order could be “subject to remedial measures and other potential administrative action.”

A growing number of universities across Canada have discontinued in-person exams due to rising COVID-19 cases among students.

These include Queen’s University in Ontario, the University of Victoria in British Columbia and St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia.

Queen’s University announced on Sunday that “(a)ll remaining in-person exams scheduled for the remainder of the examination period to Dec. 22 will be changed to an alternative delivery format wherever possible. Should an alternative delivery not be possible, then exams will be rescheduled in the new year.”

Queen’s students were told they would be contacted by their departments with more details. The announcement did not apply to online exams, which will “proceed as planned.”

The Edmonton Public School Board (EPSB) has passed a motion to embed “anti-racism” into the kindergarten-to-grade 6 curriculum.

According to a Dec. 14 agenda published by the Board of Trustees of Edmonton School Division One Kingsway, a motion by Trustee Julie Kusiek was passed on the matter.

The motion calls on “the Edmonton Public Schools Board of Trustees (to) affirm advocacy for … anti-racism to be embedded within the K-6 curriculum.”

According to the board’s website, “anti-racism” means “direct action to acknowledge where privilege exists, raise awareness, advocate for change, and challenge beliefs (such as prejudice, bias and stereotypes) at the personal and institutional level to create and implement action to fight racism for individuals and within an organization, workforce or group.”

Despite the Canadian government having awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts to North American manufacturers, Parliament Hill has been giving out masks made in China to MPs, their executive assistants and other employees.

According to La Presse, the masks have been distributed for several weeks.

The president of the manufacturing company Prescientx Barry Hunt told La Presse he is annoyed by the government’s decision to use Chinese-made masks.

“This is an affront to our country,” said Hunt. “I am completely speechless.”

Hunt, who is also president of the Canadian Association of PPE Manufacturers (CAPPEM), said he is more furious that the 20 companies involved in this collective have been excluded from government contracts for the next few years.

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has entered into long-term contracts with two corporations to make masks.

PSPC awarded a five-year, $250 million contract to American industrial goods company 3M to produce N95 masks, while Montreal-based mask-manufacturing company Medicom received a 10-year, $382 million contract to make N95 and surgical masks.

3M and Medicom also received financial support from the Canadian government to expand their facilities. 3M collected $23.3 million meant to upgrade a plant in Brockville, Ontario. Medicom obtained a subsidy of $29 million.

Hunt said to La Presse that the companies that are part of CAPPEM have not obtained any financial assistance to start up local productions. Continue…

When they announce more "cases" (even though the people are not sick) they then use those case numbers to demand masks and social distancing, none of which work.

Daniel Therrien said that asking people to provide personal health information ‘such as vaccination status’ is something that is ‘certainly a reduction of privacy.

Canada’s Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien said that although it’s not clear whether the federal government has the legal ability to mandate a person to disclose their vaccination status to obtain a service, there is “no question” vaccine passports should only be temporary.

Therrien made the remarks last Thursday at a press conference while tabling his annual privacy report to the House of Commons. He said his department is still investigating many complaints made under the Privacy Act due to COVID jab mandates enacted by governments.

Therrien noted that the question of whether it is “reasonable for public health purposes for governments to require the disclosure of this information” in a pandemic is “not as clear-cut as it might seem.”

“We are investigating and therefore I cannot provide a definitive conclusion,” said Therrien. “That is exactly what we’re investigating.”

Therrien said that asking people to provide personal health information “such as vaccination status” is something that is “certainly a reduction of privacy.”

He noted that there is “no question” that the disclosure of “medical information including vaccine information is an exceptional measure.”

“If it were not for the pandemic, obviously we would not have to provide information in restaurants or other venues to have access to these venues. So it is exceptional, there’s no question about that,” said Therrien.

He then noted that vaccine passports “should not be permanent, there is no question about that.”

Toronto police are asking for the public’s help to identify a suspect in the murders of billionaire philanthropists Barry and Honey Sherman.

Det. Sgt. Brandon Price says police have not been able to rule out one individual who was captured on surveillance video around the time of the murders on the evening of Dec. 13, 2017.

The founder of the generic pharmaceutical company Apotex and his wife were killed inside their Toronto home.

Investigators have said autopsy results showed the pair died by “ligature neck compression.”

Police have also said there were no signs of a break-in.

Price says the individual walks into the area of the Sherman house, which isn’t captured by video, and stays there a while before leaving.

“We have been unable to determine what this individual’s purpose was in the neighbourhood,” Price said.

“This invidividual’s actions are highly suspicious.”

Late last year, investigators said a person of interest had been identified in the case, but so far, no arrests have been announced.

The family offered a reward of up to $10 million for information that would help solve the case that made international headlines.

It also hired its own team of private investigators to look into the homicides.

Price said video analysis shows the individual is 5’6 to 5’9 tall, but they are unable to say the individual’s, sex, race, or other identifiers.

As more employers require COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment, new websites have emerged to help the unvaccinated find jobs.

In August, the federal government announced mandatory vaccination for employees working in federally regulated sectors and public venues. Since then, hospitals, banks, police services, and some provincial administrations have introduced similar policies for current staff and future hires.

The mandate has meant that thousands of Canadians who refused vaccination have lost their jobs or been placed on leave. Now, some are turning to social media platforms such as Telegram, where channels have been created to help connect those who are unvaccinated with non-discriminatory employers.

Jabless Jobs Inc. is a new job recruitment platform that aims to help unvaccinated Canadians find work with employers who don’t require the jab.

George Douklias, creator of Jabless Jobs, told Global News that he first set up a job board on Telegram to find himself a new job after his employer started “introducing vaccine restrictions,” which he disagreed with.

Douklias said he registered Jabless Jobs as a company after it “blew up” when more people joined. Despite its name, Douklias said the jobs offered are not limited to the unvaccinated.

“Jabless Jobs is an employment service with a mission to connect non discriminatory employers with like minded job seekers. We aim to give people hope by empowering everyone to find financial security regardless of their personal choices,” the company’s website says. Continue…
