Jesse Osborne and Cruz matched numerous details being revealed about the latest in a too-long list of school shootings that continue to rock the nation and rob families of children in a place once considered safe.

As background emerged about Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old former high school student accused of killing 17 people and injuring 15 others in a shooting in Parkland, Florida, on Wednesday, traits noticeably reflected information coming out in the waiver hearing for another accused school shooter, Jesse Osborne.

Osborne, 14 at the time of the Townville shootings, will be tried as an adult in the deaths of his father, Jeffrey Osborne, and 6-year-old Jacob Hall.

Both Jesse Osborne and Cruz had been dismissed from schools for disciplinary reasons. They each searched out or posted videos of killing animals, and they both forewarned of their eventual choices in online messages, according to authorities and former classmates.

Both also allegedly returned to their former schools to take the lives of students or teachers, many who wouldn’t have even been there when they attended.

Cruz had been expelled from school at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, after getting into a fight.

Osborne had been suspended from his middle school after bringing a machete and hatchet to school.

Both had made previous threats of harm. Osborne had threatened to “kill the bullies” at West Oak Middle School, said Dr. Julian Sharman, who had done a psychiatric consult on Osborne after the machete incident.

Cruz had been banned from bringing a backpack to class because administrators were concerned he may have tried to bring ammunition in it. His classmates had said that Cruz was the most likely to shoot up the school, according to USA Today.

Cruz had posted a picture on Instagram of a dead toad, under which he wrote, “I killed a lot of them,” according to The Independent.

Dr. James Ballenger, a forensic psychiatrist who evaluated Osborne and also evaluated Charleston church-shooter Dylann Roof, said Osborne told him he liked to shoot at or near dogs, liked to taunt his pet rabbit and smash frogs on concrete.

Both had also shared some of their plans online. A YouTube user named “nikolas cruz” commented on a video last year, saying he wanted to be “a professional school shooter.” Another user had notified the FBI of the comment, though the FBI admitted it never followed up on the tip.
