SANTA FE, N.M. — The assistant director who handed Alec Baldwin a prop gun that killed a cinematographer on a New Mexico film set must make himself available for an interview with state workplace safety regulators, a judge has decided.

District Judge Bryan Biedscheid on Friday granted a request by the Occupational Health and Safety Bureau of the state Environment Department to issue a subpoena to Dave Halls, assistant director for the movie “Rust,” local news outlets reported.

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed and director Joel Souza was wounded in the Oct. 21 shooting on the Bonanza Creek Ranch film set near Santa Fe.

Safety officials tried twice since Nov. 2 to interview Halls for their investigation but he declined both times through his attorney and said he wouldn’t agree to an interview until a criminal investigation into the shooting is complete, a compliance officer wrote Wednesday in an affidavit in support of the subpoena request.

The interview with Halls is needed because he had responsibilities for set safety, knew who was present during the shooting and had handled the gun, the application said.

Rebecca Roose, deputy cabinet secretary of the Environment Department, told the Santa Fe New Mexican that the department proposed a Tuesday interview but that the judge could set another date or Halls’ attorney could fight the subpoena.

Halls’ attorney, Lisa Torracco, on Saturday did not immediately respond to a voicemail left by The Associated Press seeking comment.

However, KOB-TV reported that Torraco told the station that Halls will cooperate with state investigators.

Baldwin has said he didn’t know the gun contained a live round and that investigators must find out who put it in the weapon.

This coming week, Baldwin City will look to build on recent downtown success as it starts tapping into additional resources associated with its entry into the Kansas Main Street Program.

It was announced in March that Baldwin City, Atchison and Junction City were selected as this year’s Kansas Main Street Program cities.

Lori Trojan, executive director of the Baldwin City Chamber of Commerce and the Baldwin City Main Street Program, said three Kansas Main Street Program representatives, including Director Scott Sewell and business specialist Shelley Paasch, will visit Monday and Tuesday to tour the community and introduce the program to residents.

The three will meet with residents from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Lumberyard Arts Center, 718 High St., Trojan said. They will meet with downtown property owners, developers, and local and county-level elected officials, she said. Tuesday the three representatives will meet with the four strategic planning committees.

The Kansas Main Street Program’s website defines itself as a “self-help” program that provides technical assistance to help communities maintain and revitalize their downtowns. The program does that through focusing on the four areas of economic vitality, tourism, promotion and design.

The Carson City School District Board of Trustees on Tuesday will consider changing the boundaries of the district’s election areas to come into compliance with Nevada Revised Statute 386.205.

The discussion follows the city’s Board of Supervisors’ recent discussions to change current ward boundaries and voting districts to fall in line with the U.S. Census. The Board of Supervisors is considering its map at public meetings Dec. 16 and Jan. 6. The school district is beginning its process to change the manner in which trustees are elected to comply with the NRS.

Also Tuesday, the board could take action on the amended budget for the 2021-22 school year that includes revisions for the district’s certified enrollment figures, its audited fund balance, carry-forward amounts and recommended augmentations to certain funds. In May, the board passed a balanced budget with the district expected to receive $4 million from federal stimulus funding through 2023 for learning loss and revenue needs, according to fiscal services director Andrew Feuling.

In other items, the board will have an opportunity to interview candidates and possibly choose a parent representative for its Family Life Advisory Committee, change its ground lease agreement for its Greenhouse Project to include additional property at Carson High School to develop a composting and nursery production area for an extended term through Dec. 31, 2027, and discuss and take action on Superintendent Richard Stokes’ annual evaluation for the 2021 calendar year. Stokes has announced he will be retiring in June 2022 and the board is conducting a search to find its next superintendent.

The Board of Trustees meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Robert Crowell Board Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

Villainizing the unvaccinated is all the rage these days, especially from those who have zero answers for ending this pandemic other than the same tired nonsense they've peddled for almost two years now.

After lockdowns and masks did little to nothing, vaccines were supposed to do the trick. Even Dr. Anthony Fauci himself predicted the jabs would bring a quick end to the pandemic in November … 2020. Yet, far more people have died so far in 2021 - when vaccines were prevalent - than all of last year.

So now, thanks to a Delta surge in some places and the rise of the possibly milder OMICRON variant, we're back to lockdown threats and mask mandates in blue areas, even as people in red states like Florida, Texas, and Tennessee live and breathe freely. 'If only those stubborn anti-science rubes would get vaccinated,' we're told, 'the pandemic would end.'

Except, it's far more complicated than that, a fact that Dr. Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon who served as President Donald Trump's Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, pointed out during a Sunday appearance on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures." Asked by anchor Maria Bartiromo about whether people should take a booster shot, Carson destroyed the logic of the Branch Covidians with some well-placed truth bombs.
