Autism Now Diagnosed in 1 in Every 44 Children, CDC Says

One in 44 children at age 8 in the United States have been diagnosed with the developmental disorder, a jump from the previous estimate of 1 in 54 children, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report found.

But a second study offered more heartening news: After looking at 4-year-old children in the same 11 communities analyzed in the first report, researchers found there was progress in the early identification of children with autism. These children were 50% more likely to receive an autism diagnosis or special education classification by age 4 when compared to the 8-year-olds.

"The substantial progress in early identification is good news because the earlier that children are identified with autism, the sooner they can be connected to services and support," said Dr. Karen Remley, director of the CDC’s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities.

"Accessing these services at younger ages can help children do better in school and have a better quality of life," Remley said in an agency news release.

Still, why autism rates have climbed in recent years remains a mystery, one expert said.

"The findings from these 2 new reports of [autism] prevalence with varying results across different geographic settings and sociodemographic groups reflect the many challenges that researchers and public health officials have in trying to determine the true prevalence of [autism]," said Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

"It is important to note that there are significant variations across locations in terms of how and when children with [autism] are evaluated, and it is unclear to what extent these differences reflect true differences in the prevalence of [autism] versus a consequence of the evaluation process," he added. "These two new reports from the CDC about the prevalence of [autism] among preschool and grade school children raise as many questions as they answer with respect to the many differences that were noted across the eight different geographic settings and the various sociodemographic groups examined."

The new rate was based on 2018 data from 11 communities in the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) network. Autism rates in those communities ranged from 1 in 60 (1.7%) in Missouri to 1 in 26 (3.9%) in California.

These differences could be due to how communities identify children with autism, according to the CDC, which noted that some communities also have more services for children with autism and their families.

Study co-author Dr. Deborah Bilder, a professor of child and adolescent psychiatry and pediatrics at Huntsman Mental Health Institute at University of Utah Health, said the findings give doctors and families a better road map for diagnosis and treatment.

“Early autism diagnosis and treatment optimizes children’s ability to learn, engage with others and develop independence,” Bilder explained in a university news release.

“That’s why these studies are so important," she stressed. "They not only help us get a better idea of the growing prevalence of autism, but can also help us improve policies, services and research directed toward helping children and their families affected by autism.”

The reports were published Dec. 2 in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

A venture capital firm backed by the Chinese government is a major investor in an artificial intelligence company that counts Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo's husband as a top executive, a potential conflict of interest as her agency works to counter China on the world stage.

Danhua Capital, based in California but established with the financial backing of the Chinese Communist Party, is one of the main funders of PathAI, an artificial intelligence firm that employs Raimondo's husband, Andy Moffit, as its chief people officer. Danhua Capital has been invested in PathAI since at least 2017, when it joined five other funders to contribute $11 million worth of seed funding for the artificial intelligence startup. It is unclear how much Danhua Capital has invested in PathAI, a private company, but the Chinese firm lists PathAI on its website as one of its featured "biotech and health" investments.

Danhua Capital was established and funded with the help of the Chinese government as part of its "penetration of Silicon Valley," according to a 2018 Reuters report on the firm. The Center for a New American Security (CNAS), a liberal think tank with former staffers now in the highest ranks of the Biden administration, testified to Congress in 2018 that Danhua Capital's mission is to use its capital to narrow the technology gap between China and the United States.

Neither Raimondo nor PathAI responded to requests for comment on Danhua Capital's investment. As commerce secretary, Raimondo is tasked with managing the U.S. business relationship with countries across the globe, and she has emerged as one of the most pro-China voices in the administration. In a September Wall Street Journal interview, Raimondo said the United States should strengthen economic ties with China, arguing "robust" commercial engagement with China would "mitigate any potential tensions" with the global rival.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Raimondo's agency was pushing back on efforts by others in the Biden administration to block Chinese technology firms from working with American companies. Commerce officials are arguing internally, according to the report, that the administration's tougher approach to China would hurt U.S. companies.

Raimondo said on Thursday she would not urge U.S. companies to pull sponsorships from the upcoming Beijing Olympics after President Joe Biden announced a diplomatic boycott of the games over human rights abuses. "What individual companies do is entirely up to them," Raimondo said. "We’re not going to pressure them one way or another."

Raimondo's ethics agreement to serve in the Biden administration bars her from participating in any matter that could have a "direct and predictable effect on the financial interests of PathAI." Raimondo's financial disclosure forms show she would greatly benefit from the company's success. In addition to an annual salary, Moffit was given a significant number of ownership shares in the company as well as stock options. Biden calls for action on gun violence prevention on anniversary of Sandy Hook

President Biden on Tuesday urged Congress to act on gun violence prevention in remarks commemorating the ninth anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

“As a nation, we owe all these families more than our prayers. We owe them action,” Biden said in a video message released by the White House.

He said the Senate needed to quickly pass three House-passed bills, one to extend background checks, another to keep guns out of the hands of abusers and his Build Back Better act that includes a $5 billion investment in community violence prevention and intervention.

“I know our politics are frustrating and can be frustrating and it’s particularly frustrating now. But we can’t give up hope, we can’t stop,” Biden said.

The president mentioned the school shootings in Parkland, Fla., in 2018 and in Oxford, Mich., last week, adding that similar shootings occur in Black and brown communities every day.

The White House unveiled a fact sheet on Tuesday on the work the administration has done to combat gun violence, touting executive orders from the president to reduce the proliferation of ghost guns, which are untraceable guns assembled using parts bought online; regulate stabilizing braces used on firearms and help states enact red flag legislation, among other things.

It also noted that local governments have used funding from the American Rescue Plan, which Biden signed into law in March, towards community violence intervention and hiring more law enforcement officers.

When asked if there are any conversations about a filibuster carve-out to pursue gun legislation, a senior White House official didn’t comment directly.

“I think the president and the direct to camera really speaks to this issue in an impactful way. He shares in the frustration with gun safety advocates regarding the lack of progress made in Congress, and he also talks about the progress made in the past,” a senior White House official said, referring to the video released on Tuesday.

In the video, the president called Sandy Hook, which occurred during the Obama administration when he was vice president, “one of the saddest days we were in office.”

China threatens US; says era of US defending democracy, human rights ‘is over’

On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin criticized the U.S. military’s decision not to punish those behind an August airstrike that killed 10 civilians and said the U.S. can no longer use the “pretext” of supporting democracy and human rights to act around the world.

Wang’s comments came in response to a set of Monday remarks by Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby, who said after a review of the Aug. 29 strike, which killed 10 civilians, “There was not a strong enough case to be made for personal accountability,” for those involved.

“The US troops’ atrocity of killing civilians in Afghanistan is unacceptable. It is all the more outrageous that the U.S. exonerates the perpetrators with impunity on various grounds,” Wang said.

Wang also noted the recent U.S. Summit for Democracy, held by President Joe Biden, in his criticisms.

“While the US talked about ‘democracy’ and ‘human rights’ at the ‘Summit for Democracy,’ the innocent Afghan people who were gunned down by the US military were brushed aside and their families had no place to complain about their grievances,” Wang said. “This is the harsh reality brought to the world by the so-called ‘democracy’ and ‘human rights’ advocated by the U.S.” 

Wang expressed condemnation for U.S. military interventions in countries like, Afghanistan. Iraq and Syria, and called for the international community to “look into the U.S. military’s war crimes of killing innocent civilians around the world and hold it accountable.”

“Justice may be delayed, but it will not be denied,” Wang added. “The era in which the U.S. acted arbitrarily in the world under the pretext of so-called ‘democracy’ and ‘human rights’ is over. The day of reckoning will eventually come for the U.S. military who committed the crimes of killing innocent civilians in many countries.”

Wang’s remarks come amid recent U.S. condemnations of China’s own human rights record. Last week, the Biden administration announced a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, citing China’s human rights record and particularly its activities in Xinjiang, where China is estimated to be holding about 1.8 million ethnic minority Uyghurs in internment camps.

China has also come under scrutiny for the recent disappearance of possible kidnapping of tennis player Peng Shuai, who went missing after publicly accusing a top Chinese official of sexual assault. Other Chinese citizens, such as billionaire Jack Ma, have gone missing after appearing to criticize the Chinese government and its leaders.

Last week, amid negotiations, the US slapped new sanctions on Iran. A senior US delegation is headed to the UAE this week to work on tightening existing sanctions. Some banks in the UAE are still doing business with Iran, something Washington wants to stop.

The White House said last week that President Biden had ordered his administration to prepare for “other options” if diplomacy with Iran fails. “The president has asked his team to be prepared in the event that diplomacy fails and we must turn to other options,” White House Secretary Jen Psaki said.

DeSantis Blows the Whistle: Biden 'Effectively' Running a 'Mass Human Smuggling Operation'

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is equating the Biden administration with human smugglers for the way he said it moves illegal immigrants throughout the country in the dead of the night with no explanations offered.

During a Monday appearance on “The Ingraham Angle,” DeSantis explained why states far from the southern border are feeling the impact of illegal immigrants flooding into America.

“So, the border is obviously a disaster and some people say, ‘Well, that’s a problem for Texas or Arizona.’ Well, actually, the Biden administration puts people on planes and flies them into Florida in the wee hours of the morning. They’ve done over 70 flights in the last six months, dump people here,” DeSantis said, citing a report by his office, according to Fox News.

“And we had — a few weeks ago — one of those people that Biden dumped ended up committing a murder in northeast Florida. So, these are crimes that would not have happened but for Biden’s recklessness.”

Last month, a grand jury indicted Yery Noel Medina Ulloa, a 24-year-old illegal Honduran immigrant, for first-degree murder after Francisco Javier Cuellar was fatally stabbed in his home Oct. 7 in Jacksonville, the New York Post reported. The outlet said Ulloa allegedly originally lied to authorities and claimed to be a minor.

Police believe Ulloa was on the flights DeSantis has criticized.

DeSantis wondered how President Joe Biden would like illegal immigrants dumped in his hometown, and said he might do something about it.

“So, our view is, if they’re going to be dumping, we want to be able to facilitate transfer to places like Delaware, and, so, we have $8 million in my new budget to be able to do that,” the governor told Fox News.

DeSantis said those who ship illegal immigrants all over might pay a price.

“We also look to these carriers that the federal government is contracting with, and we are going to pass legislation that says, ‘If you are facilitating Biden’s policies, which is effectively a mass human smuggling operation, you are not going to be able to do business with the state of Florida or other local governments, and we are going to charge you restitution for each individual that you are bringing,’” he said.

The Biden administration’s shuttling of illegal immigrants has been reported multiple times by media outlets.

In May, WCRB-TV in Chattanooga, Tennessee, reported on the surreptitious strategy taking place there, in which migrant children who were flown in overnight were later bused to cities in Florida and Texas.

Fauci continued lying, “We have up to 60 million people in this country who are eligible to be vaccinated, who have not gotten vaccinated. We’ve gotta do better than that if we want to get this thing over with.”

Former NRL player Brett Finch charged over alleged child abuse material offences

Former rugby league star Brett Finch has been released on bail after being charged as part of an investigation into an alleged child abuse material ring.

Mr Finch, 40, was one of eight men arrested in the past month who police allege "expressed desires to engage with sexual activities with children" in an adult phone chat service investigated by detectives.

The former State of Origin player was arrested at a home in San Souci in southern Sydney about 6.30am on Tuesday.

Police seized a mobile phone for forensic examination and Mr Finch was taken back to Kogarah police station.

There he was charged with five counts of using a carriage service to transmit or publish child abuse material.

Mr Finch was granted police bail to appear before Sutherland Local Court on January 11, 2022.

NSW Police's Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad established Strike Force Hank to probe the alleged activities of men using the chat service.

Police allege the chat was used to share child abuse material and discuss the sexual abuse of children.

Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty said participants were aggressive in their pursuit of child sex offending.

"We will allege that each of the men arrested by detectives over the past month expressed desires to engage in sexual activity with children, and in some cases, attempted to access child abuse material from other users of the service," she said.

"Producing, disseminating or possessing child abuse material are serious offences, and detectives will continue to dismantle these types of operations, so children are free from harmful situations, exploitation and abuse."

Detectives had previously arrested seven men — aged 34 to 71 — during raids across Sydney and NSW beginning in November.

Police searched homes in Petersham, Cranebrook, Surry Hills, Stanmore, Coffs Harbour, Shoal Bay and Gerroa.

The seven men were charged over their alleged involvement in the chat service and remain before the courts.

Rex George Harrison, 66, will now serve at least five years behind bars after the Court of Appeal found his original sentence 'manifestly inadequate' and doubled the non-parole period.

Harrison pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court in November 2020, to sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl and was sentenced to six-and-a-half years' imprisonment.

The former chef also pleaded guilty to possessing and transmitting child exploitation material.

The grandfather was labelled a 'predatory' offender who contacted girls over social media, manipulating them to send vile images that were discovered on his mobile phone.

Andrew Cuomo ordered to return $5.1M pandemic book profits to state

New York’s top ethics panel on Tuesday ordered disgraced ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo to pay the state $5.1 million in book profits he made on the backs of taxpayers amid the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The extraordinary resolution was approved by the Joint Commission on Public Ethics in a 12-1 vote — a month after the ethics agency voted to revoke its prior approval allowing Cuomo to earn outside income from his book “American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic” while he was still governor and New York was in the throes of the deadly coronavirus outbreak.

JCOPE rescinded its approval after concluding that Cuomo violated pledges not to use state resources or government staffers to prepare the book. He must pay the money to the state by next month.

The resolution, drafted by commissioner David McNamara, a Senate Republican appointee, said Cuomo now “lacked the legal authority to engage in outside activity and receive compensation in regard to the book” since JCOPE rescinded its approval.

Liz Cheney (R-NeverTrump) revealed numerous texts sent to Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on Jan. 6, begging Trump to tell the people who had entered the Capitol to desist. They got him now, right? After years of the Russian collusion hoax and Stalinist show trial impeachment proceedings, they finally got him! Well, no. In fact, the texts Cheney revealed prove definitively that there was no Jan. 6 insurrection at all.

The Daily Beast gives Cheney’s revelations the biggest possible buildup: “A bombshell dropped in Monday night’s Jan. 6 committee hearing when it was revealed that Donald Trump Jr.—along with Fox News stars including Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham—begged White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to get the president to make a national address and halt the Capitol riot.” The unspoken corollary is that Trump paid no heed to these appeals from some of his most fervent supporters because he secretly or not-so-secretly supported the “insurrection.”

At first glance, it does look damning. Donald Trump Jr. texted Meadows: “He’s got to condemn this s**t ASAP. The Capitol Police tweet is not enough.” And then: “We need an Oval Office address. He has to lead now. It has gone too far and gotten out of hand.” Hannity texted in the same vein: “Can he make a statement. Ask people to leave the Capitol.” Ingraham wrote: “Mark, the president needs to tell people in the Capitol to go home. This is hurting all of us. He is destroying his legacy.” Fox & Friends’ Brian Kilmeade chimed in: “Please, get him on TV. Destroying everything you have accomplished.”
