Authorities in the West African country of Togo arrested three journalists for taking part in a discussion broadcasted end of November live on YouTube about the alleged involvement of two ministers in corruption, the CPJ reported on Monday.

Togo national police summoned and arrested the publication director of the privately owned L’Alternative newspaper, Ferdinand Ayité, 10 days after the broadcast. The publication is a member center of OCCRP.

A day after the arrest, the police summoned also the director of the privately owned Fraternité newspaper, Joël Egah, and the editor in chief of L’Alternative, Isidore Kouwonou. Egah was then also arrested while Kouwonou was released under judicial supervision.

CPJ stated that the journalists’ lawyer, Elom Kpade, said Ayité and Egah were accused of “contempt of authorities” and “propagation of falsehoods,” while Kouwonou was accused of complicity in these two crimes.

According to the law, a person proven guilty of “contempt against representatives of public authority” may be punished with up to two years in jail and a fine of US$1,722. In addition, sharing fake news may be punished with up to two years in jail and a fine of $3,445.

However, Kpade stated that there is no legal justification for Ayité’s arrest, because press offenses are “decriminalized” in Togo.

Since police arrested him without previously showing any documentation, the lawyer described in a YouTube video the process as an “abuse of authority.”

The president of the local media association Togolese Press Patronage, Isidore Akollor, said that “grievances brought against journalists in the exercise of their profession must be assessed with regard to the provisions of the Press Code and not the Penal Code.”

The government of Togo suspended L’Alternative twice in the past two years: in February 2021 and in April 2020. In addition, Ayité’s phone number appeared on the Pegasus Project list of those allegedly selected for potential spyware surveillance.

Meet Ghislaine: Daddy’s Girl

Absent from mainstream discourse on Ghislaine Maxwell’s ongoing trial is any mention of the ties, not only of herself, but her family, to Israeli intelligence. Those ties, forged by Ghislaine’s father Robert Maxwell, are critical to understanding Ghislaine’s history and her role in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual blackmail and trafficking network.

The trial of Ghislaine Maxwell, the alleged madam of Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual blackmail and sex trafficking network, has attracted considerable mainstream and independent media attention, though not as much as one might expect given the level of media attention that surrounded Epstein’s 2019 arrest and death or given the public interest in the Epstein/Maxwell scandal and its broader implications.

Unsurprisingly, the broader implications of the Epstein/Maxwell scandal have been largely, if not entirely absent, from mainstream media (and some independent media) coverage of Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial as well as absent from the case itself. For example, despite physical evidence of sexual blackmail stored at Epstein’s residences being shown by the prosecution (with the names of those incriminated being notably redacted), the prosecution chose not to mention even the potential role of blackmail in Ghislaine Maxwell’s activities and motives as it related to her involvement in sex trafficking activities alongside Jeffrey Epstein. Not only that, but the names of Ghislaine’s close contacts and even some of her defense witnesses, along with considerable information about her role in Epstein’s network that is very much in the public interest, is due to be filed under seal and forever hidden from the public, either due to “deals” made between the prosecution and the defense in this case or due to rulings from the judge overseeing the case.

Going hand in hand with the blackmail angle of this case is the specter of Ghislaine Maxwell’s family ties to intelligence agencies, as well as the intelligence ties of Jeffrey Epstein himself. Given that blackmail, particularly sexual blackmail, has been used by intelligence agencies – particularly in the US and Israel – since the 1940s and beyond, it is deeply troubling that neither the blackmail or intelligence angle has played any role in the prosecution’s case or in the mainstream media’s coverage of the trial.

To remedy this lack of coverage, Unlimited Hangout is publishing a 2-part investigative report entitled “Meet Ghislaine”, which is adapted from this author’s upcoming book on the subject. This investigation will detail key aspects of Ghislaine Maxwell’s links to intelligence agencies and sexual blackmail activities that are relevant to the case against her and perhaps explain the silence from the prosecution and their interest in sealing potentially incriminating evidence against Ghislaine from public scrutiny. Part 1 of this article will focus on Ghislaine’s father, Robert Maxwell, a “larger than life” figure who straddled the worlds of both business and espionage and whose daughters inherited different aspects of his espionage contacts and activities as well as his influence empire following his 1991 death.

The Making of a Maxwell

To understand Ghilaine Maxwell’s history, one must start with a hard look at the rise of her father, Robert Maxwell. Born in what is now part of Ukraine, “Robert Maxwell” was the last in a series of names he used, with Abraham Hoch, Jan Ludvick, and Leslie Du Marier among his earlier aliases. The name Robert Maxwell emerged at the behest of one of his superiors in the British military. Maxwell had joined the British military during World War II, having left the village of his birth prior to the war, when the Third Reich began its expansion. Maxwell’s parents and his siblings are believed to have died in the Holocaust.

provided a copy of PROMIS to Israeli military intelligence, which contacted an Israeli American programmer living in California. That programmer then planted a trapdoor or back door into the software.

Once the back door was installed, Brian attempted to use his company Hadron Inc. to market the bugged PROMIS software around the world. Having been unsuccessful at trying to buy out Inslaw, Brian turned to his close friend Attorney General Ed Meese, whose Justice Department abruptly refused to make payments to Inslaw that were stipulated by contract, essentially using the software for free. Hamilton and Inslaw claimed that this was theft. Some have speculated that Meese’s role in that decision was shaped not only by his friendship with Brian but also by the fact that his wife was a major investor in Brian’s business ventures.

Meese’s actions forced Inslaw into bankruptcy, and Inslaw subsequently sued the Justice Department, with the court finding that the Meese-led department “took, converted, [and] stole” the software through “trickery, fraud and deceit.” Meanwhile, with Inslaw seemingly out of the way, Brian sold the bugged software to Jordan’s intelligence service, which was a major boon for Israel, and to a handful of private companies. Eitan, nevertheless, was unsatisfied with Brian’s progress and quickly turned to the person he thought could most effectively sell PROMIS to governments of interest all over the world—Robert Maxwell.

Salesman and Spy

Through Degem and other fronts, Maxwell marketed PROMIS so successfully that Israeli intelligence soon had access to the innermost workings of innumerable governments, corporations, banks, and intelligence services around the world. Many of Maxwell’s biggest successes came in selling PROMIS to dictators in Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America. Following the sales, and after Maxwell collected a handsome paycheck, PROMIS, with its unparalleled ability to surveil anything from cash flows to human movement, was used by these governments to commit financial crimes with greater finesse and to hunt down and “disappear” dissidents.

In Latin America, Maxwell sold PROMIS to military dictatorships in Chile and Argentina. It was used to facilitate the mass murder that characterized Operation Condor, as the friends and families of dissidents and so-called subversives were easily identified using PROMIS. PROMIS was so effective for this purpose that, just days after Maxwell sold the software to Guatemala, this US-backed dictatorship rounded up twenty thousand “subversives” who were never heard from again. Of course, thanks to the back door in PROMIS, Israeli intelligence knew the identities of Guatemala’s disappeared before the victims’ own families. Both the US and Israel were also intimately involved in the arming and training of many of the Latin American dictatorships that had been sold the bugged PROMIS software. It is worth noting that Israel’s government and military-industrial complex was simultaneously involved in selling arms to many of these same governments.

According to journalist John Jackson, who was present when Ghislaine and her mother Betty boarded her father’s yacht shortly after his death, it was Ghislaine who “coolly walked into her late father’s office and shredded all incriminating documents on board.” Ghislaine denies the incident, though Jackson has never retracted the claim, which was reported in a 2007 article published in the Daily Mail. If Jackson is to believed, it was Ghislaine – out of all of Robert Maxwell’s children – who was most intimately aware of the incriminating secrets of her father’s financial empire and espionage activities.

Congress Approves $200 Million for Israel’s Missile Defense Needs

New funding comes after Israel relied on systems to stop Hamas rocket attacks

Congress approved $200 million in funding for Israel's critical missile defense programs as part of the annual U.S. defense spending package, according to a review of the legislation that was approved earlier this week.

The National Defense Authorization Act, the sprawling yearly spending bill, allocates $108 million to Iron Dome, Israel's chief defense against rocket attacks from Hamas and other Iran-armed terror groups. This funding will allow Israel to procure the components necessary to keep Iron Dome operating in the face of mounting regional threats. Some of that money will also make its way back to the United States since the system relies on components made in America.

David's Sling, which is designed to intercept enemy planes, drones, and ballistic missiles—such as those fired by Iran—is slated to receive $30 million. The Arrow 3 Upper Tier Interceptor system, which is capable of destroying a ballistic missile in space, was given $62 million. The funding for all of these defense systems will provide a future bulwark against Israel's enemies, which continue to develop their own advanced weapons primarily with Tehran's assistance. The money will also help Israel maintain Iron Dome and its other systems after they were severely strained in May of this year, when Hamas fired thousands of rockets at civilian targets during several weeks of violence.

Rep. Doug Lamborn (R., Colo.), who spearheaded the funding initiatives and ensured they remained in the final version of the NDAA, told the Washington Free Beacon that it is important to prioritize Israel's missile defense in the face of mounting Democratic opposition to such programs. House Democrats on the party's leftward flank have become increasingly vocal in their opposition to U.S.-Israel security cooperation. Reps. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.), two of the House's most vocal anti-Israel antagonists, have sought to block military aid to Israel and have brought many other Democrats to their side in recent years.

"I was very pleased we fully funded the Iron Dome and other Israeli missile defense programs, which, historically, were never controversial," Lamborn said. "Unfortunately, in recent years leading voices in the Democrat Party have become increasingly anti-Israel, and so much so that they oppose providing our strong friend Israel an entirely defensive weapon system like Iron Dome created to protect civilian population centers."

Lamborn also was able to secure language in the NDAA to increase "U.S.-Israel cooperation on missile defense, including directed energy."

"It is my hope," he said, "that soon Iron Dome will be supplemented by ‘Iron Beam'"—an even more powerful version of the current defense system.

In addition to missile defense, Congress authorized more than $6 million for joint U.S.-Israeli cybersecurity initiatives. These have become critical in recent years as Iran and other malign regimes use sophisticated hack attacks to disrupt Israel's defenses and interfere with military operations.

The $6 million will establish a grant program to boost U.S.-Israeli cybersecurity projects conducted in tandem with the Department of Homeland Security. Private companies, nonprofit groups, academic institutions, and other government agencies are eligible to obtain the grant money as long as they are directly engaged in a related program with Israel.

Leaders of EU Countries Unanimously Vote for Prolonging Russia Sanctions

The EU economic sanctions, which have been in effect for more than seven years, target the financial, energy and defense sectors in Russia. Initially, these sanctions were introduced by the EU in July 2014 for a period of one year following the political crisis in Ukraine and Crimea rejoining Russia.

Leaders of the EU countries have unanimously voted for the prolongation of sanctions against Russia during the EU summit in Brussels, European Council President Charles Michel said on Friday.

"Massive consequences & severe cost will follow if Russia takes further military action against Ukraine. #EUCO leaders unanimously agreed to roll over economic sanctions against Russia. We call on Russia to keep its part of the bargain and proceed with Minsk implementation," Michel wrote on his Twitter page.

Moreover, according to the EU Summit, the existing restrictions have a significant economic impact on the Russian economy and deprive Moscow of an access to sensitive technologies.

"Sanctions limit access to EU primary and secondary capital markets for certain Russian banks and companies and prohibit forms of financial assistance and brokering towards Russian financial institutions. The measures also prohibit the direct or indirect import, export or transfer of all defence-related material and establish a ban for dual-use goods for military use or military-end users in Russia. The sanctions further curtail Russian access to certain sensitive technologies that can be used in the Russian energy sector, for instance in oil production and exploration," the council said.

Before the initial sanctions came to an end, in March 2015, the duration of the sanctions was linked to the "full implementation" of the Minsk agreements. From then on, they have been extended every six months, based on the EU's evaluation of compliance with the agreement.

WH Confirms Biden Plans to Run for Reelection as Harris Reveals They Haven't 'Talked About It'

Earlier, CNN reported that Harris and her office have felt alienated from the administration amid growing tensions with the president.

US President Joe Biden plans to run in the 2024 presidential election in tandem with current Vice President Kamala Harris, said Deputy Press Secretary of the White House Karin Jean-Pierre at a briefing on Thursday.

She was asked to comment on Harris’ interview with The Wall Street Journal, where the latter revealed that she had not yet discussed her 2024 election plans with Biden.

“I can't speak to a conversation that the vice president and the president have. I could only say what and reiterate what [Press Secretary Jen Psaki] and what the President has said himself: That he is planning to run for reelection in 2024,” Jean-Pierre said after she was asked to clarify Harris’ remarks.

The vice president had claimed that she hadn’t talked about future elections with Biden, as they “haven't completed our first year and we're in the middle of a pandemic.”

“I’ll be very honest: I don’t think about it, nor have we talked about it,” Harris said in the interview, published earlier on the same day.

Earlier, CNN reported, citing numerous sources, that Harris’ office has been at odds with Biden. According to the report, some officials said that Harris, who was said to be planning on running for president, lacked competence in her areas of responsibility.

In March, Biden tasked Harris with addressing the migration issue, a sensitive policy area that has become one of the current administration's biggest weak spots politically, leading the vice president to become an object of constant criticism from the Republicans.

For 4th time, Republican senator blocks passage of Iron Dome funding bill

Rand Paul insisting that $1b in supplemental aid for missile defense system come out of US assistance to Afghanistan; could delay bill’s passage until at least February

Republican Senator Rand Paul blocked a fourth consecutive request by Democrats Wednesday to pass legislation granting $1 billion in supplemental funding for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system.

As he has argued the previous time he blocked the unanimous consent measure in the past two months, Paul insisted that the funding come out of the $6 billion in proposed US assistance to Afghanistan.

Democrats came under fire from pro-Israel groups in early October after House leadership briefly delayed a vote on the bill amid opposition from a handful of progressive members. However, the funding went on to pass overwhelmingly 420-9-2, moving to the Senate, where it has since been held up by Paul.

The Iron Dome funding bill is still certain to pass, but it will likely require a floor vote, as it did in the House. A Senate source told Jewish Insider that may have to wait until February, when the legislation can be added to the omnibus spending package.

Once the bill is approved by the Senate, it will be brought to US President Joe Biden for his signature. The president has already vowed to approve the funding.

Israel made a request for the extra funds after the Iron Dome worked on overdrive during May’s Gaza war, when Hamas fired some 4,400 rockets at Israeli towns, according to the IDF.

Lancet Publishes Letter By Professor Who Warns That ‘Stigmatizing The Unvaxxed Is Not Justified’ By Science & Is ‘Dangerous’

The Lancet, one of the world’s oldest and best-known medical journals, has published a letter that warns high-level government officials and scientists around the world to stop claiming that the unvaccinated are a threat to the vaccinated.

The piece entitled COVID-19: stigmatizing the unvaccinated is not justified, was written by Professor Günter Kampf, an associated professor for hygiene and environmental medicine at the University of Greifswald in Germany.

He warns that “stigmatizing the unvaccinated is not justified” by science and is “dangerous”

Kampf claims that a belief has been propagated by high-level officials that there is a ‘pandemic of the unvaccinated,’ which wrongly implies that the vaccinated are not relevant to the spread of covid-19

In his article he argues that “There is increasing evidence that vaccinated individuals continue to have a relevant role in transmission”

“It is wrong and dangerous to speak of a pandemic of the unvaccinated”

It warns that “historically, both the USA and Germany have engendered negative experiences by stigmatizing parts of the population for their skin color or religion.”

The piece ends with an urgent plea, “to stop the inappropriate stigmatization of unvaccinated people, who include our patients, colleagues, and other fellow citizens, and to put extra effort into bringing society together.”

In the USA and Germany, high-level officials have used the term pandemic of the unvaccinated, suggesting that people who have been vaccinated are not relevant in the epidemiology of COVID-19. Officials’ use of this phrase might have encouraged one scientist to claim that “the unvaccinated threaten the vaccinated for COVID-19”.1 But this view is far too simple.There is increasing evidence that vaccinated individuals continue to have a relevant role in transmission. In Massachusetts, USA, a total of 469 new COVID-19 cases were detected during various events in July, 2021, and 346 (74%) of these cases were in people who were fully or partly vaccinated, 274 (79%) of whom were symptomatic. Cycle threshold values were similarly low between people who were fully vaccinated (median 22·8) and people who were unvaccinated, not fully vaccinated, or whose vaccination status was unknown (median 21·5), indicating a high viral load even among people who were fully vaccinated.2 In the USA, a total of 10 262 COVID-19 cases were reported in vaccinated people by April 30, 2021, of whom 2725 (26·6%) were asymptomatic, 995 (9·7%) were hospitalised, and 160 (1·6%) died.3 In Germany, 55·4% of symptomatic COVID-19 cases in patients aged 60 years or older were in fully vaccinated individuals,4 and this proportion is increasing each week. In Münster, Germany, new cases of COVID-19 occurred in at least 85 (22%) of 380 people who were fully vaccinated or who had recovered from COVID-19 and who attended a nightclub.5 People who are vaccinated have a lower risk of severe disease but are still a relevant part of the pandemic. It is therefore wrong and dangerous to speak of a pandemic of the unvaccinated. Historically, both the USA and Germany have engendered negative experiences by stigmatising parts of the population for their skin colour or religion.
