I can second that GIMP is not intuitive at all. It is powerful though.
Some shortcuts I use in paint.net
M for Move
S for Select
CTRL+A to select all
click new layer icon which looks like a square with a plus sign in lower right corner of the Layers Palette & hit CTRL+V to paste into a new layer
I also use the gradient tool to create shadows / create 3D looking text or images.
Clone Stamp works well too. Ctrl + Click to set clone area, then click and drag.

You don't have to lasso with getpaint.net.

And adjust the Tolerance slider on the toolbar until you have what you want selected. Bad example of a photo to pick, but if the background is semi single color, it is easier.
