Aurora Cannabis, 22nd Century Group, License Biosynthesis Intellectual Property to Cronos Group

04:23 PM EST, 12/14/2021 (MT Newswires) – Aurora Cannabis (ACB) on Tuesday said it 22nd Century Group ( XXII) agreed to give a non-exclusive license for their biosynthesis intellectual property to Cronos Group ( CRON ) .

The company the agreement will advance research and development on thebiosynthesis of cannabinoids, "a process common in the pharmaceutical industry, involves using living micro-organisms to convert simple substances into complex compounds". Aurora said the process should allow the production of rare cannabidiod compounds efficiently and at high purity levels.

"We are deeply interested in the evolution of cannabinoids, and this is a promising step toward the commercialization of cannabinoid products using biosynthesis. The long-term potential for rare cannabinoid molecules produced through biosynthesis is incredibly promising given their efficient production methods, and potential therapeutic benefits and utility in health, wellness, and consumer products," chief executive Miguel Martin said in a release.

Aurora shares closed down C$0.17 to C$7.53 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
