The term Synagogue of Satan has been greatly abused to refer to Jewish people in general. This mainly comes from a literal interpretation of Scripture (literalism) used on Revelation 2:9 and Revelation 3:9, while failing to review the context of these passages. Context is king when it comes to interpreting Scripture. The historical context behind the phrase "Synagogue of Satan" is fascinating. It was apparently a common phrase used by Jews when criticizing other Jews. Similar language was used in the Dead Sea Scrolls, by Essene Jews in reference to the other Jews (Pharisees, Sadducee and Hellenist) whom they considered too corrupted by the world. Basically, it was an insult Jews used against each other.

In Revelation 2:9 and Revelation 3:9, the Apostle John (a Jewish Christian), used the term, while addressing other Jewish Christians in the churches of Asia Minor. He said this in reference to other Jews in the area, who rejected Jesus, and were using their influence with Rome to persecute Jewish Christians in the region.

The insult is mainly an insult between Jews. It was never intended to be a epithet used by non-Jews against Jewish people in general. Therefore, I think it's entirely inappropriate to use this term in reference to Jews now.
